Does gabapentin TREAT a nerve damage or only acts as a pain killer to reduce pain?

Hi I had injured my right foot while playing cricket couple of months back and CT scan revealed a minor metatarsal fracture which was treated by putting on a fibreglass cast. However I was unable to walk and then my doc suspected I also had a soft tissue / nerve injury in the foot and prescribed gabapentin. After about a week of taking 100mg gabapentin twice daily, my pain has reduced substantially and I am now able to walk properly and the tingling sensation in the foot has gone.What I want to know is that does gabapentin TREAT a nerve injury or only reduce the pain till the time one is taking the medicine? Will the pain come back once I stop taking it?

I have been on gabapentin, 100mg twice daily for 7 years due to peripheral neuropathy. It relieves the pain for me. When I stop, the pain returns. I have not experienced any side effects and I take alpha and beta meds for high blood pressure.

Nerve damage from injury can repair over time depending on the severity and extent of injury. Once the nerve heals, you should not need the medication.

I'm on 600mg 3x at nite and 1 600mg during the day. The med. does work on the nerves. I may have to have it increased because the of the pain. Waiting for next check with pm. Best of luck to you.

I was just diagnosed with OPLL, and was given gabapentin because I am having a lot of neck, shoulder and arm pain, with tingling in my fingers, it helps with my pain and the tingling. It does make me sleepy and a little loopy though!
