I,ve had 3 scopes on my right knee. Ive had all the steroid injections, viscosupp. everything. Had a great surgeon to do my scope last april had a lot of relief but pain and swelling is back.. I'm going back to see him again on the 14th of April 2014. My knee is swollen aching etc. My family Doctor seems to think I may need a new knee? I'm 44 years old, the pain is immense and I don't believe in narcotics- has anybody has these same symptoms with either knees? Am I too young for a replacement or a partial? My last diagnosis was severe arthritis Grade 4 defects, patella, medial femoral condyleritis. Patella,

According to my surgeon, there's not really anything such as "too young" if your knee is interfering with your quality of life. To me it makes no sense to spend your earlier years hobbling around, waiting until you have secondary damage to your hip and irreversible muscle atrophy, to have a replacement. Then you're disabled when you're young and when you're old.

Get a new knee now, enjoy it, and if you need another in 20 years there will be newer and better prostheses and surgeries to meet your need then.

I agree with Judy that if your pain is so intense that it interferes with your daily life then it's worth considering. I have advanced bone on bone osteoarthritis in both my knees. I'm only 30 but plan on getting them fixed as soon as I've been given the go ahead (my leg is still broke).

In the meantime while you're waiting I'd suggest water therapy for pain and try yoga or tai chi for low impact exercises.

Live with the pain as long as possible, knee replacement has a limited life depending on how active you are, cortisone doesn't help many, ive had many surgeries, ive also had a duralane injection, it has caused more issues and pain than I thought possible, I'm 50 yrs old now, my injection was almost a year ago , my surgeon has asked I wait as long as possible before my knee is replaced, know your limits, but if pain is destroying your daily life to the point you can't function then you may just need to have a very early in life replacement, good luck

duralane, have you had a second opinion on your knee? That might be a good idea if you're in constant pain.
