Having Injection Monday-Knee Joint

I am having an injection of Hyalgan on Monday July 20th. Can anyone tell me what to expect right after the injection? Will I be in a lot of discomfort?

I am new to this forum and appreciate any information.

Welcome to HealingWell, Tallis. I've had three series of hyalgan injections. My doctor always injected Lidocaine first, to numb the area. Then she'd leave the needle in, change syringes and inject the hyalgan. The Lidocaine did sting, but the Hyalgan didn't hurt at all. My knee always was completely pain free as I left the office, because of the Lidocaine.

The Hyalgan allowed me to put off knee replacement for more than three years. I knew my knee was completely trashed, but wanted to wait until I quit working to have surgery. I was able to walk comfortably and live my normal life.

Thank-you so very much for your fast response. I had already asked the orthopedic surgeon about

freezing before hand. Now I am sure that is the way I want to go with this injection. My knee is also gone and is bone rubbing upon bone. He advised me that they grade the osteoarthritis on a scale of 1 to 4 where 4 is the worst. He told me it is past 4. I am located in Canada so I don't know if this is a grading system used here only.

  I bought a pair of Mephisto shoes yesterday ($320.00) which are supposed to provide  good support and redistribute the body weight in different ways. I am also hoping to lose weight on a programme I have started. I am not terribly overewight but 10 to 15 lbs off would help take the weight off the knees.

I am very pleased to have found this forum and the support it offers and will keep checking in.

I will post after the injection.

Tallis, if you come to the point of needing joint replacement, just let me share that the surgery was much easier than I anticipated.

Hope the injections do the trick for you!

Hello and welcome to HealingWell and the Osteo Forum.  I am so glad you found us. 

I do hope the injection works well for you.  My osteo is in my back and in my thumb joint.  My thumb is bone on bone and I was to have surgery 3 years ago but keep putting it off. 

I agree with Judy, most people who have the surgery for their knees do very well.  Please do keep us up to date on how you are doing.

I had the injection MOnday. I had a lot of pain around the injection site that was quite aggrvationg. However, it has now left. I donlt know how long to wait to expect results. What I have noticed today was improve,ment in the flixibibility of the knee joint and not as much pain However, I am now experiency pain just below the joint (shins?). I guess this is a journey that I have begun.
I see he specialist again Ag 31 and he will assess it at that point in time.

Tallis, the Hyalgan is usually given as a one shot a week for three weeks, then if there's not adequate relief after 4 weeks, they can give two more. At least that's the way I always got it.

Sometimes when your worst pain is relieved, your next-to-worst pain becomes more noticeable. Since I got my bad knee fixed, I've had more pain in the other knee.

there has been no mention of another injection. I see the Orthopedic surgeon again on AUgust 31.

So I think I am hearing this needs to be done more than once. It is a very expensive injection here

($437.00) and is not covered by any medical plans.

I am not feeling too hopeful at this point in time.

I know it was very expensive, but my insurance did cover it. Probably your surgeon wanted to try one injection to see if that would help, since your insurance doesn't cover.

Yes, my doctor gave it as (and the recommendation is for) three weekly injections, wait a month and if the relief isn't adequate, two more weekly injections. I needed all five injections each time, but that would hold me for 12-18 months.

I wish I had asked alot ore questions than I did. I will have a list of them on Aug 31. I had a good day with the knee yesterday but am really feeling it again today. It has also done nothing but rain here so I am sure that isnot helping things.

This morning I saw the orthopedic surgeon who administered the Hyalgan shot. The shot has helped somewhat but not the way I had hoped. I have agreed to a partial knee replacement and am now on a waiting list. I am in Canada and the waiting lists are long. It will be January  at the earliest. Apparently the hospital stay will be four days and I will be up within a week probably walking with assistance. I have been told it will be 3 months before I reap the full benefits. I was told I have to have it done but it was a matter of when. I feel it is better to have it done when I am younger.

I had total replacement in early May, and it was the best thing I ever did. I had the surgery on Tuesday and walked out of the hospital with the help of a walker on Friday. Within two weeks I'd put away the walker and the cane, and now I'm working out regularly, doing quad and hamstring, abductor and adductor strengthening with 50 pounds of weight.

I hope your result is as good as mine, Tallis.

Thank-you for the encouraging words. I will be going for another MRI very soon in preparation for the surgery. I will stay connected to thsi forum. It has been so helpful for me.
