Oxford Partial Knee Replacement Surgery?

I have RA, but hoping to get some feedback from anyone here who has heard of this surgery..or experienced it?  What are your thoughts?

I have had knee replacement, but I had total. I hope someone else here can answer your questions.

That's interesting Judy.  Did the knee replacement improve your life?  I have no idea why they are saying that RA sufferers are poor candidates.  I suppose I just need to research this more.  I was making a list of pros and cons for myself...well...got the cons, several of them, but did not see any pros that jumped out at me.  I dont see RA on your list, but I did post this on the RA forum with no replies, other than the admin who suggested I come here.

Thanks for taking time to reply.  I have to figure out where to go from here.

It improved my quality of life 100%, actually. I had post-traumatic osteoarthritis after an accident and surgery many years ago. My knee was bone-on-bone. I staved off surgery for about five years with Hyalgan injections and very careful walking. I couldn't do stairs, and at times I had to use a cane. For the last year I had constant pain that would wake me up at night.

I had my knee replacement on May 5 this year and walked out of the hospital with minimal assistance from a walker three days later. I had four weeks of rehab, and have been going to my fitness center ever since. I had less pain immediately, didn't have to worry about the knee buckling on me (I also had an ACL tear); by two weeks after surgery I was walking unassisted; after about a month I was able to go up and down stairs normally.

I have been essentially pain free for at least six months, except when the weather changes, when I will sometimes get a dull ache. But no more knives stabbing through my knee and no more barbed wire inside the joint.

If you look back in the forum, there are other threads dealing with joint replacement also.

Thank you Judy.  I will look around here at older posts.  I am like you were, bone on bone.  Part of me wants to throw caution to the wind and just do it.  I just get so intimidated because my infliction is RA.

 

I'm happy your knee replacement did a 360 on your life...that is so wonderful yeah   Maybe I will be singing the praises of knee surgery someday too!! lol   You hit the nail on the head about the constant relentless pain.  This has been my life for the past 10 yrs.

I have done a bit of reading re the Oxford Partial Knee Replacement Surgery. It feels to me like people like it or they don't like most surgeries. smhair



I would certainly do as you plan, research the topic and make sure you have the answers to your questions before you make your final decision.

Hi friends, i,m going in for a partial knee replacement on the 9th of march. i,m 58 and was hoping to play doubles tennis again. is anyone doing this?

Good luck with knee and tennis.....a friend of a friend at 76 did a total and I understand he's doing good....he was very athletic and strong, and that helps I believe....

I'm 76 and doing all to save myself from surgery, hjp replacement was B A D... J

PRP and Stem cells are being used a lot by those who do not want to do surgeries....I'm considering PRP for my knee.

Remember to check out all supplements you take for possible interaction with your other medications. Also only take supplements that you surgeon gives the okay to.

I cannot discuss RA, but TKR 3 years ago is one of the ten best things I ever did for myself!

After surgery, this is what worked for me: rest, be pampered, take pain meds as needed, work hard at rehab and do the extra exercises even though it hurts and takes time, get a handicap sticker for your vehicle, and be good to yourself! I knew mine was successful when I woke up because it hurt worse, but did not hurt at all where it had hurt before! If that makes any sense! Three weeks post-op, I returned to school with a cane and sat in a wheelchair (for sitting comfort). I taught half day Summer school for 3 weeks! At about 6 months post-op, I quit thinking about my knee all the time. After 2 years, I hardly knew it was not the original God gave me at birth!

I pray whatever you do is as successful!
