Good morning.

I was diagnosed with lyme disease June 09. I am receiving treatment and feel back to normal except for my knees. I have severe pain in the inside part of both knees. I have tried cortisone injections every three months. They worked a little at first, but the last few did nothing at all for me. Then I went on to Synvisc injections. Saw no improvement in pain and stiffness. Ortho surgeon and I were discussing the possibility of arthroscopy to clean out the joint. After xrays, that was thrown out. The right knee is bone on bone. The left knee has some room left. He can clean the left but the right needs a replacement. He will not entertain a replacement because of my age(44). I feel lost. The stiffness upon waking is terrible, but it doesnt' go away. I have pain in both all day long. I have been unable to have fun with my children. We can't travel because I can't walk. This is not living. THis is hell.

There are some docs who refuse to replace knees when you are under a certain age. I think that is bunk!! I think maybe you need to get another opinion from another ortho. Bone on bone is not going to improve, its just going to get even more painful. I am 52 and am scheduled to have my left knee replaced sometime this fall. The shots are no longer working for me either. Hugs!

I would definitley ask for a second opinion.

 I went through 3 different Dr's (over 1 year) before I was even diagnosed with OA. I knew there was something really wrong, but I was told "you don't need an MRI". If I hadn't insisted something be done I would still be going through the BS.

My sister is a nurse and she has told me many times "You have to be your own advocate"

You should at least be getting physical therapy. I don't know how your health plan reads but physical therapy can be great. Some of the therapists are terrible though. Again it is a very individual thing.

What about medicine? Mobic works for me though I have to take it after a meal. Have to take a pill 20 minutes before the meal as mobic is a heavy-duty asprin script medicine.

I am currently taking Etolodac ER 600mg.  I think it helps, I can't imaging how bad it would be without it. I have tramadol and percocet but prefer not to take them as I cannot function well while on them. I think my OS wants to know that the Lyme is gone and not an issue before he will consider surgery. I just don't know how long that will take.
