I'm 67 years old(how I hate admitting that). Had very successful TKR in mid-September. Shortly after was hit with unbearable pain in other knee, shoulder pain diagnosed as torn rotator cuff and arthritis, and swelling of hands. Doctor put me on 15MG of Meloxicam once a day and 2 regular strength Tylenol 3 times a day. This has been since January 20th and I seem to be getting worse. For over a week now, I literally cannot get out of bed in the morning. My husband has to help me up and get me on a walker. My "non-surgery" foot has swollen to about four times its' normal size. Neither doctor(one for knee,one for shoulder) has suggested surgery at this point. Had two P.T. sessions for shoulder pain but had to quit because of difficulty walking - don't think I can get out of house. Does anyone have any advice or hope for me?

First off, you need to call your primary care doctor first thing in the morning and tell him about the swelling in your foot. Get an appointment for him to evaluate you right away. Meloxicam can cause the foot swelling and you are at greater risk for developing cardiac problems with this symptom and your age. Also, are you taking any blood pressure medication? Certain types of can be inactivated by the Meloxicam. This can cause additional problems.

I think once you address the other non-orthopedic problems, you will be able to move better and therefore see what the actual level of pain is in the shoulder and other knee. Inactivity can cause additional stiffness and pain and some of what you feel might be from this.

I also would think about seeking an evaluation from a rheumatologist. The sudden onset of symptoms you developed after the TKR might be a systemic problem that effects joints.

Also, I was diagnosed with torn rotators cuffs in both shoulders in 2004. I am not a candidate for surgery due to other medical conditions. I went to PT and worked hard and now have mostly full range of motion and no pain. I have to continue the exercises I was taught but they worked. I would try to get the other issues controlled and see if you can return to PT to work on that shoulder.

I hope this gives you some idea of what you might be able to do.

After my very successful TKR, my foot on the same side was exquisitely painful. Finally went into a una boot, foot was taped. Went to another surgeon's office. Took me about an hour to drive there. Found a good therapist FINALLY and she was able to improve my range of motion. There is an excellent pain management person who thought perhaps there was a problem with my bursa. That took me 1/12 hours to get to. I still don't have complete range of motion in one foot. This took years to figure out. I no longer visit the prime care doctor, the surgeon's office or my old rheumatologist. Found a new orthopedic doctor in another office.

Don't give up hope.
