Anyone get tired when taking Zyrtec?

My doc tried putting me on Zyrtec a couple months ago because my Allegra doesn't really help me much, but my insurance wouldn't cover it. Now that it's available OTC, I'm thinking about trying it but I'm hesitant about the statement that says may cause drowsiness. Has anyone taken this and if so, how tired did it make you feel? After taking it awhile, did the drowsiness go away after your body got used to it?

I used to take Zyrtec at night instead of Zyrtec D which I take in the morning because I was afraid it would keep me awake. It did make me drowsy at first, but after I got used to it, I didn't have any problem with it. It didn't make me feel groggy in the morning. I would suggest taking it at bed time and you shouldn't have any problem. Now, I take Zyrtec D twice a day.

I can't take any decongestants because I'm sensitive to the ingredients (makes my heart race and super jittery) so I know I can't take Zyrtec D, that's why I want to try plain Zyrtec. But taking it at night sounds like a good plan. Thanks Carla!

My husband has taken Zyrtec for years and he always takes his after dinner. He doesn't have any drowsiness problems from it.

I have taken zytec for years it made me drowsy at first but now I take it every morning with no problems at all

Thanks for the responses smile That's what I was hoping to hear is that once your body gets used to it, the drowsiness will go away. I haven't got any yet but I'm working my way to the store lol

CAN SOMEONE HELP WITH THIS QUESTION i HAVE ON zTECK? i HAD A COLD IN jAN..WHICH LEAD(WHAT THE DR SAID) A SINUS INFE TION...TOOK ANTIBOTIC FOR A WEEK AND A SPRAY..NOTHING HELPED MY NOSE CONGESTION..THEN WENT TO ANOTHER DR HE SAID IT WAS VIRAL..SO HE GAVE ME ANOTHER PREscriptION AND A NOSE SPRAY..i STILL HAVE THE CONGESTION,ITCHY EAR,ICTHY THROAT,SNEEZING AND SOMETIMES COUGHING>>i SWEAR IT IS AN ALLERGHY..mY QUESTION IS..i TOOK A ZTECK THIS MORNING..BUT NOTICE THE D HAS MORE OF THE NOSE DECONGESTINT..BUT PHARMACIST SAID IT WOULDMAKE ME zIGGY AND HE WAS NOT HAPPY about ME TAKING..BU THE OTHER ONE DOESN'T REDUCE THE SWEELING ASO THAT COULD MAKE ME WORSE????WHAT GOES WITH ALL THESE PILLS AND WHAT HELPS?> i JUST WANT TO SOUND NORMAL AGAIN..THANKSSMY SPELLING IS ALL WRONG ON THIS..SORRY

Hi School,

If decongestants aren't recommended for you, then I'd suggest trying something called Zycam. There is one for colds and one for allergies. They are homeopathic (natural) and therefore have no side-effects or interactions with other medications. You can find the product over-the-counter in some drug stores and health food stores.

Also, I've had sinus infections and my doctor has said that they often take much longer than 1 week of antibiotics to get rid of because the sinuses are so labyrinthine and any allergies or other causes of sinus congestion (such as a cold) can make getting rid of the infection very difficult. My doctor did recommend saline nasal rinses with a netti pot (or you can get over-the-counter saline nasal spray) to help wash away the infection and keep the mucus membrane moist.

Thank you so much for caring enough to write back..sometimes these Posts are a waaste of time..

I did go to dr..and he said it was an infection gave me these strong pills and said if this doesn't work nothing would and he gave me aspray..well the pills were funny..they made me feel worse..and he refused to give me anymore..said I needed a Xray of Chest??nothing to do with my chest>>He had listened to my chest..he wasn't on my insurance..think he wanted to make more money..

so I went to anoter..he aid it was viral if those pills didn't work..so he gave me another presc..nose spray and some more antibotics..they gave me the runs..funnn..and they didn't work after a week..so went to drug store and bought some saline and zertecc..not the D.

brother sai dhe took it for a week..so we will see..I think I sound a little better..but will see after a week..

Never had infections near nose or anything like this  esp allergies..but you know I will try yours after a couple of days..

I think these Dr.really are just scratching their heads..would like to go to nutrristst..some one told me that stress can really do a job on your sinus area?  and that I have been..

I have been taking Zytec for 4 years now, 10 mgs. It does not bother me u get use. Well this how I started taking the medication. Take it before you go to bed so your wide awake the next day. Once ur body gets use of taking the medication, u can slowly see how it reacts during the day. But only try it on weekends when u don' have to drive anywhere. :-) yeah

My allergist put me on Xyzal (which has been described as "Son of Zyrtec") a few months ago. I had a week or so of mild drowsiness initially, but nothing that seriously interfered with my day to day activities.

I've been very happy with it. This is one of the worst pollen seasons so far, but I've had only very mild symptoms (occasional itchy eyes). I didn't even realize that allergy season had started until someone mentioned it, and I certainly never would have known the pollen count was so high.

I should add that I am getting weekly allergy shots.

Welcome to HealingWell.  We are glad you are joining us. I had been rather home bound for a couple of weeks  because of two other chronic illnesses and had not really paid any attention to the weather.  Well, one of my friends since grade school picked me up yesterday and we ran around all day long.  I am paying for it now.  I have bronchitis an a terrible sore throat.  As much as I hated  to, I knew I had to go ahead and start on Prednisone or I would start having asthma attacks.

I am glad to hear that you are on top of things for this allergy season.  Please send some of your good luck down my way.  :-)

Sherry, Joseph is correct in that Zyrtec has been replaced with prescription "Xyzal" I've used it and it did not make me drowsy, However it did make a friend of mine who had it as well very drowsy. so as with any new medicine becareful when using it for the first time!!!
School, wish I knew of some advise to help you, but the only thing is if you think you have allergies then see a allergy/asthma doctor as they have updated medicines and testing. Hope you get better soon.

I have been taking Zyrtec D and I have no appetite, feel down, have to force myself to act normal. I hate it. Claritin D does the same thing. I am so depressed with it. I need it, but i'd rather suffer than feel like this. Any suggestions?

Try plain zyrtec for awhile. If you feel better then it's a reaction to the decongestant.
