Sinus, breathing problems, ear pain

Hi, for months now I have been getting a burning sensation on and off in my nose.  My nasal passages seem to be blocked, but there doesn't appear to by any mucas that is blocking them.  It is fine for a few days, then just flairs up for no apparant reason.  Today for example, I really couldn't breathe and ended up having a panic attack at work, which was very unpleasant.  More recently, I been getting pain behind the top of my jaw just next to my ears.  If I press it on it hurts like hell and feels rock hard, and I'm forever trying to clear the blocked sensation in my ear by biting down or swallowing.  It feels like I'm at the top of a hill but my ears just won't pop !  Its causing me alot of discomfort and getting me down.  When the 'attacks' happen, when I can't breathe, I burn up loads and my face goes bright red and itchy, and I almost retch trying to get air.

I've been to the doctors quite a few times about this and have been prescribed the following:

Amoxycillin (2 courses)

Cefalexin 250g (4 a day for 8 days)

Beconase Nasal Spray

Today, I've been given Ciprofloxacin 500mg - 2 a day for 10 days.

I am a smoker BUT I'm giving up so you could say I'm not a smoker as I haven't had a ciggie in 8 days, and intend to stay stopped.

I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere sorting this out, and its really doing my head in.   I've recently changed doctors as it took my last one over 6 months to figure out I had gastritis, and that was after me paying £200 to see a specialist, so I can't get a 2nd opinion.

Does anyone reckon there is something else wrong, or should I just persevere with these antibiotics ?

Sinus infections can and do hurt bad and I'm sorry your having a rough time. My suggestion would be to try a nasal wash or rinse to clean all the toxins out of your nose, then maybe see a ears, nose, throat specialist (ENT). Maybe a CT scan of your sinuses to see whats going on, could help. I would also recommend probiotics with all the antibiotics you've been taking to help your body heal better. Good Luck this is just friendly advice hope you don't mind me giving it.

I'm so sorry that you've been having it rough lately. :( I don't know if it would be a sinus infection or not since antibiotics aren't touching it. Could you possibly have a fungal infection in your sinus cavity? But I do agree that you really should see an ENT for this. I know easier said then done, but it's your health and you sometimes have to be your own health advocate.

Thanks for the replies. I will give it another few days and see how I go. I had a nosebleed today too, but I have been inhaling alot of dust over the past couple of days due to knocking a wall out, but breathing hasn't been too bad :)

I agree you should see an ENT.  I wouldn't get overly concerned about the nosebleed, a lot of allergy patients have that happen from time to time.  If at all possible, I don't think you should be knocking out a wall and working in this sort of environment until you find out what is going on.  I think this will only make your situation worse.  It may have caused your nosebleed.  Keep us posted.

The wall was knocked out a couple of weeks ago, so it didn't really tie in with causing or effecting my sinus problems, although I appreciate that it wouldn't help and wore a dust mask when I was in the room :)  I had more blood today so I called the doctor as the label said to if it continued.  I called at 9:00am and explained the situation and the receptionist said the doctor would ring me.  At 19:15 I got the call after chasing it up 3 times.  Thats over 10 hours, good job it wasn't serious !!  Was told to stop taking the spray, and if these antibiotics didn't work then the next step would be ENT specialist.  The saga continues... confused

It sure is frustrating when you can't figure out whats wrong. But please let us know if you do go to see the specialist. I'm curious as to what it could be. Hang in there!

I went to see the doctor again a couple of weeks ago, who agreed the antibiotics weren't working, and said he would refer me to a specialist and to give him a ring if I hadn't heard anything in 3-4 weeks !

My ear infections went, and was not feeling too bad until last night when for no reason at all, I couldn't breathe and really struggled to stay concious for a about half an hour.  I don't think it was simply a panic attack, as I normally know when they are coming on or something triggers them, but I was simply watching TV before bed.  Eventually after speaking to the NHS they asked me to go to the hospital, who said there was nothing physically wrong with me, it was all in my head, and his closing statement after I asked him if it was to do with my sinus' was "Sinus' have absolutely nothing to do with breathing".  Today, I feel really tired, still a bit short of breath, and a bit down and pissed off, this is really starting to effect me now, I hope it doesn't interfere with my work, grrrrrr !

Aww I'm so sorry you having a rough go! Sinuses may not have anything to do with breathing but if you have sinus troubles it can make breathing a bit more difficult. Or at least make you feel like your drowning! Have you ever been tested for food allergies?
