I went to the doctor yesterday about continuing shortness of breath. He said my ears had a little fluid behind them and my nose looked a little allergic so he recommended singular. He also is switching me from Advair to Flovant because I was feeling a little hyped up and he said it could be the long acting abuterol in the Advair. Does anyone have any opinions on these meds and what I can expect from the change?

I used to take Singular and didn't have any problems with it at all.  I also use Advair and I am somewhat surprised to find out that it has albuterol in it.  I usually can't handle albuterol.  I use Xopenex in my nebulizer and Xopenex as an inhaler.  A lot of times I forget the nighttime dose of Advair, maybe that's a good thing for me since albuterol does make me so hyper.  I wouldn't think you would have any problems with Singulair, but then, we are all different.  I definitely think you should give it a try.

Advir is a long acting bronchodiltor & steroid ( inhaler)

Singular is a long acting bronchodiltor & allergy medication ( inhaler or pill form)

The steroid in the Advir could also make you hyped up.

If you have allergies sesonal or enviromental the singular might be a better choice.

I am on Singular now. Im having sevear Ashtma problems and trying anything.

I was on a steroid to treat my Ashtma and I was so hyper and my face was a liitle puffy. (But I was on an oral pill form steroid not Advir)

Interesting. I don't know if I need to be on a steroid because I have a slight wheeze every morning. Do you need to be on Steroids if you have persistant asthma or are there other options? I'm not sure why my doctor put me on Singular if he was trying to get me off the bronchodilator because of edginess. I wonder about the steroid making me edgy, has anyone else had a problem with that on inhaled steroids? I was really hyper on oral steroids.

Singulair works entirely differently than Albuterol/related bronchodilators. Singulair blocks something called Leukotriene B4 (LTE B4), which is a chemical messenger the immune system sends out during Asthma inflammation. Blocking LTE B4 reduces inflammation associated with Asthma and now also they're finding it helpful for people with Allergic Rhinitis.

Steroid inhalers can cause side-effects similar to oral steroids (Prednisone, etc.) but usually in much milder form. However, there are some who are very sensitive to the effects of any steroids, even topical ones (like in Asthma inhalers). For the more sensitive, they should discuss alternatives to steroids with their doctors.

Advair has a combination of a long-acting broncho-dilater and a steroid. Both can cause hyperactivity, but I'd suspect the broncho-dilator more than the steroid just because broncho-dilaters are notorious for causing that side-effect. An alternative would be, for example, Xopenex and a steroid-only inhaler.

My husband has exercise-induced and also allergy-induced asthma. He has found Singulair to be helpful as a maintenance medication, and has only needed his Xopenex a few times since starting the Singulair. I might need to talk with my allergist about Singulair, as I'm not fond of using the nebulizer all the time to keep my own asthma symptoms to a minimum...

That helps alot Razzle, thanks. I have heard of some people having side effects with Singulair and there was some stuff in the news about it but I guess alot of people like it and don't have serious side effects. It might be worth a try. I've wondered if I could be sensitive to steroids but it's kind of scary to go off and start messing around with things, guess it's how you learn.

Yes, they can. Inhaled steroids can do anything oral steroids can do, but because a lot less is actually absorbed, the chances of getting side-effects are usually a lot lower. Doesn't mean it can't happen, though. If I were you, I'd talk with your pharmacist about the insomnia as a possible side-effect, and if there are any other steroid inhalers that may be less likely to cause that side-effect. Pharmacists are usually more knowledgeable about side-effects than the doctors are. So once you've discussed this with the pharmacist, then talk to your doctor about it too and see what can be done.

I have abuterol and Xopenex as a nebulizer. I was using them alot when I had bronchitis but now I rarely if ever use them. My shortness of breath doesn't really respond to them and my peak flow is usually fine with the shortness of breath so I try to use as little as possible. I mainly have been wheezing in the morning and then short of breath during the day with good peak flows.

I know I have mentioned it before, but I can't tell you the number of times the  Xopenex inhaler has saved me from having to use my nebulizer.  I also use Xopenex in my nebulizer.  I just can't say enough good things about it.  You might ask your doctor about it.
