Invitation to an asthma clinic - I have asthma? News to me!

I was surprised to get a letter from my GP inviting me to asthma clinic. The surprise came as this letter was the first time the 'a' word has been mentioned! I do have a ventolin inhaler - I have terrible wheezing and breathing difficulties whenever I go to visit my best friend in London. I had some allergy tests as the fact that I am OK most of the rest of the time (I do have a bit of a rattle in my chest sometimes) made me think it was some sort of allergic reaction - turns out I'm allergic to dust mite and as my friend has chronic psoriasis that would explain the increased presence of dust mite in their home. It's a surprise to me that I've developed these symptoms after 30 odd years of life - my brother was the opposite and has grown out of his childhood asthma. How weird!

Asthma much like allergies can occur at any stage of life. Asthma also doesn't have to occur all the time. My son has asthma, but he has not been bothered with it for quite a while. But when it does bother him, he uses Asmanex and Albuterol inhalers sometimes with Singulair. He is not on medication all the time though. But it sounds like you do indeed have asthma especially if allergies are causing you to wheeze AND you have to use an inhaler. Maybe you should check out this asthma clinic - who knows, maybe they can have more information for you :)

So, very sorry that your doctor could'nt tell you out right that he thought you had asthma, maybe he couldn't face you.
like Sherry stated asthma can occur at any age, but now that you know you can find more info about it and how to
keep it in control and get better medicines to help with the control..
Sure hope you go to the asthma clinic and find out more info from them, it might help you.

Once this initial shock has worn off, I hope you can come to terms with it, perhaps..It'll be hard, but then you'll be more open
to all the vast arrays of medicines now that might be able to help you better than just the Ventolin, the ventolin should be your
rescue inhaler and you should probably be on a daily control medicine...

I think I might give it a go - my doctor's advice wasn't that helpful other than rip up all your carpets (like I have the budget for that!) I keep trying to persuade my partner that we ought to get rid of our bedding and put a matress protector down and stuff like that but he just thinks I'm being silly. I don't have that many symptoms really during normal life - I do get wheezy now and then and if I dust or hoover I get bad. We do have a washing machine with a medic cycle that seems to kill everything off my bedding and I've got an allergy vacuum cleaner with a billion filters in it. Most of the time I just put up with the odd rattle in my chest that I get. I only have full on can't breathe wheezing when I visit my friends, that's probably the only time I feel I need the inhaler.
