Hello,

I suffer from allergies a couple times a year but they really seem to flare up when I am around cats.

I spent the weekend at my dad's house and his cat kept coming on the bed and would get right up in my face.  When I woke up in the morning I was extremely dizzy and nauseaus.  Is this a sign of severe allergies or something else?  I have never had this happen before, but I haven't ever spent so much time with a cat either.  I also had hives break out on my neck and face..

Definately it can be from the cat. But if you still get dizzy and nauseas after not being exposed to cats then it's best to get yourself checked over. The dizziness and nausea can be a sign of an inner problem and sometimes that can occur with allergies - fluid build up from the sinuses can "back flow" into the ears.

It really freaked me out because it has never happened before.  The room was spinning.. and I guess the dizziness caused me to feel sick.  The next night I was at home in my own bed and I woke up fine.

Can you recommend a good medication for me to take when I visit homes with cats?

If you don't want to go the prescription route but rather OTC, you can try a couple of meds such as Sudafed, Sudafed D, Lotradine, Clariten, Clariten D, Benedryl or Zyrtec. If you want something stronger you can go to the docs and ask for Allegra or Allegra D. Personally I love Zyrtec to deal with my allergies. But it has to be taken at night because it can cause drowsiness.

Thanks again,  I will try the Zyrtec next time.  It's crazy how much allergies can affect you!!!

Amen! I don't wear makeup or perfume. My whole family is very considerate of me and avoid all perfumey things for me. My co workers even are careful of their perfumes because I get so bad.

My daughter has severe allergies and in the process of getting desensitization injections. Her allergies got so severe that it made her lymph nodes enlarge to 2cms! Scared the hades out of me! lol So yes it is totally crazy on how allergies can affect a person. Some people can get by in life with mild allergies but it's more severe allergies that tend to be the most bothersome and worrisome.
