4 month cough!

I normally post in the Crohn's forum but thought the nice people over here may have some insight into this never-ending cough I've had since April.
It began after a bout of the flu. The cough stuck around, and I'm still coughing. I have post-nasal drip and a productive cough. It's mostly productive in the morning. The rest of the day it's a dry cough and i mostly cough because my throat feels irritated. My doctor suggested allergies, but i tried flonase nasal spray and benadryl and neither helped. My lungs sound clear according to the doctor. I'm kind of starting to get worried though, because it's not improving. I've been to the doctor 3 times for this cough, and don't get any relief. This is definitely unusual for me.
Does it sound like this could be allergies?

I agree with Sherry. It sounds like what docs call post-infectious reactive airway disease, a type of asthma. Has your doctor done any basic pulmonary function tests? I had this once, and finally got well after a few months on an inhaler and allergy meds.

I remember that one because it helped me understand what was happening to me, Sherry. I was coughing so hard at times I couldn't catch my breath, had to do that old mother's trick of putting my arms up over my head to catch it.

I'd never had any breathing problems before, but had stopped smoking about five years before, so it scared me a lot, and made a big impression, lol.

I haven't had any basic pulmonary tests done-- the doc has just listened to my lungs which sounded clear.
This may be TMI, but with the coughing asthma that's been mentioned, would that cause green phlegm? When I cough, green stuff comes up. I'd always thought green meant an infection but my doctor said it does not necessarily indicate an infection.
Anyways, thanks again, and I'm getting a referral from my primary doc so hopefully I'll have an answer soon.

Are you taking an ACE inhibitor or Beta blocker for anything? My husband had a two year cough with sinus drainage and the same physician who prescribed his blood pressure med just kept prescribing him antibiotics for his "sinus infections". Until we did some investigating on our own and discovered it was from his Bp meds. He stopped taking them (with his dr's approval) and within 3 weeks no more cough or drainage. He was vomiting with the coughing spells they were so bad. Because he had sinus drainage his doc thought it coudn't be med related. But we found a forum where many had his exact symptoms of cough with drainage who were on his type of med. You never know. The more I live the more I see how we are the ones in charge of our own dx/cures sometimes.

Green could mean bile reflux. My lungs always sound fine. The fluid buildup and swelling was mainly in my windpipe.
