Bad drug reaction

Hope all of you know that you may be very hyper-sensitive to medicine.  Recently had a total knee replacement and took some morphine for pain.  Pretty soon I was on 3 liters of oxygen and had a terrible itchy rash over most of my body.  It finally cleared up but wish there was a better way than "trial and error".  People can die from these drug reactions and want you all to be aware of this.

I got augmentin for a sinus infection and had alyphlatic shock with severe hives.
It took a month on a strong antihistimine to stop the rash.

Yeah, unfortunately one doesn't know they are allergic to a medication until they have a reaction. I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad reaction to morphine. I had morphine not that long ago and I didn't exactly have a bad reaction, it just sort of felt like I couldn't catch my breath (I have that reaction to a lot of narcotic pain meds). Plus I am severely allergic to all forms of codeine and sulfa. It stinks to be allergic to pain meds!

I actually did not know that due to having asthma that I was prone to being hypersensitive to medications.

This is absolutely true, but I never attributed it to the asthma. As far as allergies go, I'm allergic to shellfish (maybe more sensitive than allergic as I never have had my throat close up or anything...just get really light headed), pet dander (and we have two cats yay...never said i was smart), pollen, dust.

No drug allergies that I'm aware of, just like you said...very sensitive. I will never take anything with DXM in it...I feel super speedy even on the smallest dose. Sudafed too...since it technically is speed...lol

Really the only OTC meds I take are advil and tums.

I'm the same way. Took an allergy test and was allergic to everything but one thing (beech tree).
I've got several drug allergies and food allergies. I also have asthma.

I think it's autimmune (sp?) due to my hypothyroidism.

Well if anybody had told me about needing two pain meds, maybe I could have talked to my allergist. I could have taken alittle bit of it and had a drive home, etc. I know I can handle darvon but I hate it because I have ibs/c...which amounts to a great deal of constipation.

O lucky me!

Found out from the pharmacist locally that there are two kinds of pain meds..."the real thing and the synthetic kind". It is so complicated!

Sometimes you need these gosh darn things though.

Have to chalk it up to a bad experience...like the old joke the operation was a success, unfortunately the patient died.

Welllllllll, I'm a beautiful genius you can't expect me to be healthy and wealthy too! Two out of four ain't bad! (giggle, giggle).

hooray...my allergist is doing some investigative work and will write me a letter to show to the anathesiologist (spelling) the next time. HOPE THERE IS NO NEXT TIME.

Yes and the allergist said my breathing was very good. I asked the nurse to open the window during testing. AIR IS THE BEST THING FOR BREATHING. Dahh, you have to study medicine for five thousand years and charge $2,500 a visit to figure that out.

So the good news is that my lungs are ok. The bad news is that I am severely allergic to drugs.  But I AM A BEAUTIFUL GENIUS WHO IS ALSO CREATIVE idea idea !
