Vacuuming the dog

Since my married daughter and her family have moved in with us the dog dander from my black lab has been an issue. While vacuuming the kitchen (yet again!) yesterday to help control the problem I hit upon the idea of vacuuming the problem at its source, the DOG! She LOVED IT! Laid down on the floor and wagged her tail, the big clown!

We have one of those 'no bag' vacuums and I could see layers of dog dander in there between layers of dog hair when I finished. She liked it, less dander on the floor and in the air, I'm happy, daughter should feel a bit better... Here's hoping I've found something that helps. Anybody else do this? (or am I just weird?)

LOL No Jeannie, you're not weird. My husband tried doing this to our lab too but she totally freaked out! It's like a circus in my house when I drag out the vacuum and it's kind of funny really. My little Jack Russel/Beagle barks at the vacuum and tries to attack the wand when I vaccum the couches and my Lab barks, drags toys out of her "toy box" and puts them in the way of the vacuum (this sort of annoys me though!). But hey! If the dog will sit still for the vacuum I think that is a GREAT idea!

I wish my cat would lie down for that.  We have a cannister vacuum and it shouldn't scare her but it does.  Cat hair is everywhere in the house.  You could knit a sweater with it.  For your lab, maybe there are there special shampoos with conditioners that can cut the dander?  (I must admit that when I saw this topic, I thought it was either spam or a new dance!)

I can just imagine trying to vaccuum Kirby. When that motor starts up, he puts himself between the vaccuum and his basket of toys, if he has any toys out he'll take them back to the basket, then he protects them from that monster.

I've got cats. They all run from the vaccumn.



I do have one who loves my back massager. She will let me rub it all over her. smilewinkgrin

I love the stories about the dog. We had a beautiful lab and with her we had a layer of hair all over the place. It was unbelievable. We had to take her to the groomer for a short shave to combat all that loose floating hair. We tried the vac but the groomer helped the most. They're great dogs just the same.

My dog tries to bite the vacuum. I guess it's a threat to her territory. She's a herding dog mix though, so twice a year she blows her undercoat and there's a whole dog worth of fur flying around.

My cat just sheds. I don't really think she'd be up for a vacuuming though.

We bath our small dog often & haven't had the nerve yet to do the cat,lol.Boots likes water & loves to play in snow but not sure how he'd do in the bath.......The vaccum,ROFL!!!!!

Wow, I think it's great the dog likes this, but I would also recommend bathing the dog once a week or at least once a month..
SnowyLyme bathing a cat can be hard, what I do is fill the tub with a inch of sudsy water first then place the kitty in the water
rubbing the suds into the body and then I have a small bucket of clean lukewarm water for rinse and get the kitty out as fast as I can
and then they like getting toweled dried, don't even think of using a hairdryer, and always always clip the nails the night before the bath day..
I have three kitties and they do get baths, as they do get dirty sometimes from not getting all the stuff in the liter box and the liter boxed does get scooped...
and all three kitties love to watch me take my bath....and lil demitri fell in the other morning, it was funny...
