Anyone out there who is allergic to glycerin. found out on Saturday threw a challenge test we did in dr. office.  Since this allergey is so rare never heard of it before need help in finding any products that dont contain glycerin.  Does any face moisturizer that doesn’t contain glycerin anyone know of? Same thing with hair products, face products, lotions?  Does anyone know of food that contain it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  And if you can email me directly that would be wonderful as well.

I'm sorry I can't be of help.  Hopefully, someone else will come along with some knowledge of glycerin allergies.

Hmmm ... I haven't come across glycerin before. It may not be cheap but maybe you could check with online suppliers for organic, natural moisturizers & other beauty products ... alot contain just the most basic ingredients ... I'm sure you will come across something. I've had to do this for some of my more uncommon allergies (like toothpaste!)

I ran a search on glycerin in food but can't seem to come up with anything I can make sense of as yet ... the most I came up with is this :

GLYCERIN (GLYCEROL)
Maintains water content: Marshmallows, candy, fudge, baked goods.

In nature, glycerin forms the backbone of fat and oil molecules. The body uses it as a source of energy or as a starting material in making more-complex molecules.

I hope that is of some help to be going on with.

thank you so much for even helping me look. But yes i know it is impossible.  I have called so many places yesterday and it looks like i might have luck at health food stores.  They have like natural and organic lotions and stuff. I cant even believe this stuff was in some of the stuff that i normal eat on a daily basis.  Thank you guys for any input and if you run across anyone else or anything please let me know. Are you sure it isn't a preservative instead of the glycerine itself? Did the doctor say what the source of the glycerine was (what the glycerine was derived from) that was used in the challenge? Sulfite preservatives are sometimes found in vegetable glycerine, and sulfite preservatives can cause allergic reactions. razzle i posted my email address now please email me. Well they ordered a bottle of it from a pharmacutical company.  It had to be special ordered. It was 99.50% pure glycerin. Not vegtable or anything like that just pure glycerin the bottle said. I will ask dr when she calls me back if im allergic to vegtable glycerin. But that is what happened the first time she thought it was a perservative in the glycerin food allergy test kit we did. So that is why she just ordered pure glycerin to see. No one i know if familiar with it. I was able to locate a face cream with all herbal stuff in it so that is good.

  you emailed me before about mastocyctosis.  That test came back negative but when i was having this reaction to glycerin she checked again will take about 1 weeks to come back.  She said sometimes have to test months, or even years before it shows up so just have to keep testing me for it.

I have been using Grassroots (sold at Khols) products (shower gel & lotion) for about a week now. They do not contain any glycerin and for my face I have been using a moisturizer from Origins (also glyrcerin free). I still have allergies, but I have noticed a  t ramendace difference. I am no longer sneezing while in the shower or after applying my lotions. I have not been tested yet for an allergy to glycerin, but I am in school for my skin care license and I have noticed I get really bad watery eyes, runny nose and such when I am giving facials. I just felt like I might be allergic to glycerin based on when I as getting my attacts. Since changing my products, it has helped me! Hopefully I have been of some help  to you! Good luck!

I was doing a search for others with this issue and found this post so I joined. My son is VERY allergic to glycerine. It closes his throat up and he carries Epipen. Some of the items we have found for him that he can use are Aim or Pepsident toothpaste. Softsoap BODY wash (not the hand soap) and the Suave for kids shampoo. Someone told me Tresemme but I haven't got a clue if that is accurate. Eucerin body lotion. Remember that MANY items you wouldn't expect to have glycerin as well. Things like Gatorade, medicines, all the way to Toaster Streudels. My son's allergist gives him glycerine drops that we use on days he has been exposed or can't avoid exposure such as allergy shot days. Allergy shots literally have glycerine in them. So with my son's allergies he was worse not better with shots until we found out he was allergice to glycerine. The drops were dosed out to where his body shuts off the reaction. They work amazing. Insurance doesn't cover them but they are worth every dollar. Good luck with your allergy and I hope my info can help in some way.

I didn't find out why I was so senitive to food, lotions till I went for an allergy test. Where they poke your skin with needles and allergens. Well the test site that wasn't to have any went nuts and all it was Glycerin. It is more common than people think.

close up tooth paste, ultra biright tooth paste.

utterly smooth is the best lotion. buy it at sams club or wall mart

shampoo is a hard one.

it is so nice to be itch free at 48.

I still have issues with my food when I go out to eat. I cook at home more. read labels.

Hello,
im new here. i have had terrible chronic cough and hack for a while, but everytime i was allergy tested i came up negative. this time though i popped positive on glycerin. if anyone can give me advice i would really appreciate it. i will try this glycerin free way of life and see if i notice any changes

Hi, I hope some of what I have will help those of you with the allergy to glycerine.... My mom has been dealing with this for sometime now... She has found some things that work for her....Here goes:

LeKair- cholesterol plus strengthening conidioning cream for hair

Tide or Era -laundry soap

Some Suave -shampoos and conditioners

Downy liquid- laundry softener

Toothpaste- some Arm & Hammer and Crest Barbie bubble gum flavor gel.

Lotion- Udderly Smooth (though it contains propylene glycol) and St. Ives Collagen Elastin facial moisturizer for all skin types

body soap- Dove bar

Deoderant- lady speed stick

I know most if not all can be found at Wal-Mart.... I hope these can help....

I am also allergic to Glycerin. I found out by accident which became a godsend. I have found some Bath and Body works soaps and lotions to be OK. Also Dove and Ivory Soap. The Ivory liquid soap is fine also. I found the only facial moisturizer I can wear is called Alpha-Hydrox AHA souffle. I am having trouble with dish soap and laundry detergent. Any suggestions?

I found Glycerol in Special K fruit crisps (strawberry). I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners and since I've been eating the Special K fruit crisps, I've had real bad headaches and an upset stomach. I get the same reaction when I ingest artificial sweeteners. I decided to take a closer look at the ingredients in Special K fruit crisps and found Glycerol. I know Glycerol isn't an artificial sweetener, but apparently it effects me the same way that artificial sweeteners do.

I just went for allergy testing and found out I am also allergic to glycerin.  I had no idea.  I haven't had allergies in the past.  They sent me to the lab for an allergy blood test because they couldn't complete the test as all the samples contain glycerin.  I guess I will be looking for all natural products as well.  I'm shocked to see it is the second ingredient in cetaphil lotion.  This is going to be tricky. rolleyes

I bought glycerin oil (glycerol) because one of my friends told me that this is the reason why does her skin become white – because I have a tan skin. When I tried using it, heat coming out from the skin where I wiped the oil then I felt itchiness, but after a few minutes, the heat and the red rashes gone. Does it mean that I have a glycerin allergy because my family used it too and they experienced what I had felt? I never make use of it again because I was bothered if I’d keep on using glycerin.

I feel your pain with finding products without glycerin. I am really sensitive to soy and all artificial sweetners. Try finding products without it, VERY difficult. They are both used in almost everything that you buy. I have become a label reader and have started writing to companies asking WHY these items are necessary in all their products.

I too understand where you are coming from. I learned long ago that I had an allergy to glycerin. They didn't test for it back then but I run a horse farm and we used to sweat our horses necks for shows. We would put a gel on it and then cover it while they worked to sweat the neck. I broke out all over my arms terrible after using it. I learned it was made of primarily glycerin.

It is in EVERYTHING now. I watch any lotions or creams before I buy them. There are a few out there that don't have it in them. I have been in a coworkers office and they said here try this hand lotion and then knew right away if it had glycerin in it as the itching begins, and I have to wash it off.

The things it is in are incredible, from lotions, creams, makeup, shampoo, to foods. Did you know that fondant (fancy cake icing) has lots of glycerin in it. Most lubricated condoms have glycerin in them. Seriously that is not a place you want to have an allergic reaction no matter which end you are on.

Be very careful as the allergy can get worse as you get older. Stay away from it as best you can.

I'm allergic to both Glycerin and Lanolin (which makes lotion and soap buying a pain, believe me) the best lotions I've found thus far are Vanicream- which doesn't have shelf rights but if you ask most pharmacies have it behind the counter, and you can buy it online, but beware the sunscreen does have either glycerin, or lanolin I forget which. I also love Miracle hand repair/foot repair http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=12876807&RN=1137&. The shower gel/bubble bath at bath and body works is safe and smells good to boot, but no other products are free of glycerin and lanolin.

My biggest advice is to become a good scanner, I check everything and I stick with a brand I like, once I find one that's safe, until they change the formula. Whenever anything changes about the bottle, double check the ingredients again, I've lost a lot of favorite products over the years.

p.s my favies for shampoo and conditioner are aussie and tresseme... Crest vibrant white toothpaste is safe. and Check Everything!! vitamins, food, neosporin-type ointments. I had my throat close a week ago (ironically during emt training) because of vitamins I was taking because I was sick, so I've learned the hard way to be careful.

and as a note to everyone, if your allergy is bad, get an alert bracelet. There are many products that emt's may use on you in a situation where you are unconcious that could kill you. they wouldn't have any idea why you were crashing and it would be disastrous.

Marshmellows

Soft candies contain glycerin to keep them moist, according to Kansas State University. Candy bars, taffy and gum contain glycerin. Candies that are labeled sugar-free may actually contain glycerin, because it adds the sweetness needed for the candy.

The WHO states that glycerin is found in a variety of condiments, like mustard and vinegar. Glycerin is also found in mixed spices and seasonings

Glycerol (glycerin) is a swetener, thickener, and preservative. It's classified as a sugar alcohol, has 60% of the calories of table sugar. It's made from animal fats in part.

Glycerol brings moisture to the surface or skin and other tissues because it irritates, which causes the hyperosmotic effect.

For people who have problems with laundry detergents, try double rinsing. The new low water machines you don't get all the soap out. My machine has a second rinse cycle, and I have to use it all the time.

I had allergy tests beginning of 1996. Was found to be severely allergic to glycerin and sulfur (onion family, egg yolks). My allergic reaction to glycerin was my heart almost stopping, plus instant asthma. A later reaction for all 3 of us being tested was severe depression and a headache. Having lots of problems now, was sent to local allergist for more testing, but glycerin was 50% of every test fluid. Had to be stopped before we could find out my new allergies. Doctor said all solutions now contain glycerin. Yes, glycerin is now being put into thousands, maybe even millions of products that have never needed it. It's a humectant and a preservative. Glycerin producers are saying to product companies that the glycerin will stabilize the product. I've had that mentioned by a number of companies I've contacted. I'd be willing to bet that the producers are laughing all the way to the bank and their stock brokers. We who are allergic must write the manufacturers of all products that include glycerin, especially those that never had it before. Had to quit using Oil of Olay because of the addition, also most calamine lotions that have been around for more than a century. Glycerin is usually cheap to produce in concentrated form. In veggies and other natural products, it's not concentrated. By the way, Procter and Gamble not only uses glycerin now, it also produces it. One soap I just recently found without glycerin is Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar. Another type of soap was a castile soap, but it doesn't kill the germs on the skin. Even pharmaceuticals aren't exempt. If all we allergic people band together and start some sort of campaign against the addition of glycerin to every sundry we use, maybe we could convince the FDA, Congress, or perhaps a university to start an investigation into it.

Have found a possible answer to the problem of finding glycerin in nearly everything we use that is manufactured. My pharmacist recommended that I contact a local compounding pharmacy about the glycerin and other allergies I have. The head pharmacist was quite helpful and will contact me within the next week about products they can produce quickly that have no glycerin, including allergen testing solutions. The only drawbacks are that the custom-produced products are somewhat expensive, and, supposedly becase of "Obamacare", most pharmaceutical insurance companies will not cover the cost of custom-made products. I would assume that they cannot make a profit on covering that type of product, since it more expensive than regular pharmaceuticals that are produced in mass quantities.

Incidentally, glycerin is in many of the vegetables and fruits we eat. The difference between that natural type of glycerin and the types being added to human-made products is the fact that, in nature, glycerin is not concentrated, nor is it dangerous to us, due to the extremely small quantities in the food. That made or collected by humans is both heavily concentrated in most cases and can be produced from either vegetable oils or animal fats.

Check for compounding pharmacies in your area for more information. Encourage them to produce as many glycerin-free products as possible and advertise and sell them as "glycerin-free". Who knows? Maybe that would encourage big business to also offer that type of product, especially if they sell well. We need to help protect the health of ourselves and the others like us, especially those who may not know they are allergic to this substance and may be suffering from severe depression, heart arrhythmias, asthma, etc.

@frbrocab I will check with the compounding pharmacy about making me something. Thanks I have also tested positive to glycerin, and wheat, corn, soy, milk, eggs, yeast, and coconut. The fact that if a label says "tree nut" that is coconut and coconut, soy, corn and all the others are added to everything. I am learning that all will make me have a fibromyalgia flair-up and such. Who would know that glycerin would be in mustard and vinegar... this site has been rather eye-opening to me tonight. Not real happy about everything I've learned.
