Only one nostril constant irritation and sneezing

 

I did notice tham that it happens when I am routing around in places that haven't been disturbed for a while like in the back of closets or under the bed or vacuuming and moving furniture to get under or in back of.

It doesn't happen while I am actually doing this stuff it's THAT night while I am sleeping.

Like whatever it is that flew up there needed some time to dig in and start tormenting me.

But then again, you could be around someone that is wearing something they had in the back of their closet.

One or two sessions with the NettiPot usually takes care of the problem. I can't do it twice in a row in each nostril, I have to wait a few hours to see if the first time got it.

My condition has gotten worse since I wrote about it. It now seems to have moved into into my sinuses. I still have no congestion, but I constantly drip clear mucous. There has never been any sign of an infection, such as yellow or green mucous. It's almost like water coming out of my head. Here's the most recent development. You know that sensation you get in your sinuses if you eat a bite of something with a large amount of horseradish or wasabi, or you breath in smelling salts or ammonia? That's how my sinuses are feeling now if I inhale through my nose. Exhaling is okay. Consequently, I'm breathing more through my mouth to avoid that. Also, this pain makes using my C-PAP machine difficult. My doctor has told me she now thinks this is NOT allergy related, and she has referred me to an ENT. I have that appointment on Tuesday, and I will report anything conclusive.

How was your doctor's visit and what was the doctor's diagnoses? I too suffer from sinusitis.

Usually chronic sinusitis suffers discharge yellow/green mucus and acute sinusitis suffers discharge clear colored mucus.

A small bug flew up my wife's nose a few hours ago. Symptoms like Tham's came on in less than an hour. She is now miserable, sneezing jags, nose running like faucet, exhaustion, pain from exertion, not seeming like an allergic reaction. I'm writing to provide details about this actual bug-in-the-nose onset.

OK, I started this thread a few years back - I was just Google searching my problem to find any answers (have done this many times before) and found my own thread with new posts!

To the person who used Vicks / Icy Hot - whyich one did you try? They are different, aren't they? I'll try anything but I'd like to know the details on how you reacted to each.

I am a dentist, but do a greate deal of research on sinus and sinuse disease. After all its all in the head and neck.

It might be a case of vasomotor rhinitis...basically the nerve endings in your nose become oversensitive is the main theory, the actual cause is sometimes unknown and is of non allergic origin, usually creating allergy type symptoms...but it is not a true allergy...there are triggers for this, it could be anything from cigarette smoke, to smog, ozone, perfume, cold temp, hot temp, change in barometric pressure...even pollen, dust and allergens can irritate the nerves without actually having an actually allergy. avoiding the triggers help if you find out what they are...obviously, smog and ozone are things we cannot escape. atrovent, astepro which have the same active ingredient ipratropium bromide help many people with the WET kind of vasomotor rhinitis. use of capsasin has also been shown to improve symptoms. just curious...is the side that is itchy your dominant side? usually the dominant side has a more sensitive nerve complex thus allowing you to do finer things like write and perform things that otherwise you could not with the other hand. Thus nerve distribution and sensitivity on that side might be more pronounced.

I just noticed that your post mentioned a "dominant side". My irritation is on the right, and I'm left-handed. I have to wonder if the others have a hand-nostril correlation? After all, the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body and vice-versa.

Weird! Mine is in my left nostril (I'm right handed). It started a few days ago when I was jogging in an indoor track. I figured it was an allergic reaction to mold (the only thing I'm allergic too). But it wont let up and it hurts to breath! Constant burning, itching, and clear mucus drips. Intense sneezes. Makes my left eye water. I've been spraying cromolyn sodium in it every couple hours but it really doesn't help much at all. I wonder if it has something to do with the weather change--this thing started when the the temperature dropped.

Sorry if this is a bit long and kind of all over the place, I'm up again at an absurd time due to sneezing and just came across this, so figured I'd throw in whats been happening to me as well.

I've been experiencing the crazy nose itching for a few years now (left nostril), along with a constant runny nose as well. It all seemed to have started after I had caught a really bad cold from a friend, and along with that I had a bad ear infection as well. I was given drops to put in my ears and took a bit of cold medicine to help with the coughing and sneezing. My cold seemed to clear up just fine in a few days, but my runny nose persisted and I was suddenly sneezing constantly. It seemed like any little smell or breeze caused me to sneeze.

I've been to several doctors, who have done x-rays and allergy tests and all suggest nasal sprays and everything you can think of, but nothing seems to help. Only the left nostril has that weird sneezing sensation, but there is clear discharge from both nostrils and both are constantly runny (there is yellow discharge usually after I haven't blown my nose for about an hour or so -- which is rare besides for mornings). I do take sinus pills now and then, which does seem to calm the sneezing and running nose down a bit, but even then I still have to pack kleenex around with me everywhere. I find it extremely frustrating and embarrassing and I'm getting to the point where I just want to give up on everything and sit at home all day with a box of kleenex because I spend most of my time blowing my nose or sneezing as it is. I can't breathe through my nose at all anymore, and have been breathing through my mouth for the last few years as well since after this started. I constantly am up about 2-3 hours each night from sudden sneezing fits and due to this I feel like I never get enough sleep and am constantly waking up grumpy, which is really putting a strain on everything in my life.

I do live in a house with 2 dogs and 2 smokers, and I have noticed that the cigarette smoke really bothers me when it never used to before (I've lived with smokers my entire life and it didn't bother me until after I had that bad cold). The dogs also never bothered me, but now I have to wash my hands and face after I pet them or play with them, when before they would sleep in my bedroom, sometimes even on my pillow (small house dogs) and I never used to get sneezy at all. Perfume bothers me, hairspray, scented candles, laundry detergent, and sometimes even just someone opening a door for a few seconds sets me off into a sneezing attack. I find it a bit weird because like I said, I don't breath through my nose anymore and if I try to I am gasping for breath within a few seconds because there is just no air flow through my nostrils. And I find it really hard to actually smell things, but yet these things set me off sneezing within a second or two of smelling them (which it seems like its done more though my mouth, since when I actually try to smell something with my nose I can't seem to smell anything, but if I'm walking in a store and someone walks by with perfume I 'smell' it but not with my nose.).

I'm heading back to a new doctor soon, hopefully they'll have something useful for me, but in the meantime if anyone has any suggestions I would really love to hear them (besides nasal sprays & being in a house without the smokers & dogs - I've tried it for a few months and it didn't make much difference since I usually leave the room as it is when people smoke to avoid the sneezing and I've learned to wash my hands & face frequently around the dogs)!

Thanks for the idea Ledotter, I'll have to mention that once I'm in to see the doctor. At this point anything that helps for more than an hour or two at a time would be absolutely amazing!

Add me to the list - have had this on and off over the least couple of years. I have it now and it's enough to drive me crazy. I have always considered it to be an allergic response and. like others I'm perplexed as to why a definitive solution has not been found. It really does feel like I've got a bug up there jumping up and down on the part of my sinus that makes me sneeze. If anyone has made progress with an accurate medical diagnosis or indeed a treatment then I'm all ears!!

Really started suffering about a year after starting with a CPAP. The ENT said the CPAP could be to blame and offered surgery which I refused. He gave me me ipatropium 0.03% nasal spray which does not seem effective. I will try to use it more often then prescribed.
The runy right nostril is not permanent but comes and goes during the year and is very incapacitating when it strikes. I have tried alll nasal irrigation, nasonex, and varying the moisture levekl on the CPAP output. Nothing reliable, but as others mention, no problem while the CPAP is being used..
A Vicks inhaler does soothe away the sneezing somewhat and benedryl does help with at least 50 mg per dose, some times 2 or three times each day. Preesing my finger against the turbinator bone also gives relief, as does leaving a little bit of kleenex in the nostril.

I have stopped the runny dose cold, twice. I use denorex shampoo(coal tar, menthol,camphor) by placing a drop of undiluted shampoo in the nostril and washing it through my nose with the shower head. A little painful but desperate times require desperate measures. Dabbing it in with a q-tip doesn't do it/ Inhaling the fumes from the mouth of the shampoo bottle does give relief but doesn't stop it.

It seems like the problem is something physical, like damage from the CPAP usage but I also wonder if it might be a brain malfunction. I think one needs to know exactly what the cause is before one can cure it.
Whatever it is, it is in my nose and driving me nuts today !
