Hi all,

I have had bronchial asthma when I was younger, though no symptoms have been present for some time now. But I understand asthma is a complex condition, so with my education in psychology I am doing a study to add to research in this field.

The research is an online survey looking at the relationship between stress and asthma. It is not a medical study, and I will not profit in any way from people participating. It is designed to understand how people with asthma attacks can be supported better.

Also please feel free to use this discussion to post your own thoughts and feelings about how an attack can cause stress reactions, or how stress affects your asthma.

I have had Chronic Asthma since I can remember. I am an 18 year old male from the United Kingdom. I have had asthma since I was 2 weeks old. I can say that stress never brings on my Asthma, and that my asthma is due to dust mainly but can flare up during or after a cold or the flu. When I get a cold, most of the time this goes to my chest causing a chest infection which brings out my Asthma. I had Pnuemonia when I was 7 brought on by a simple cold. I am the only one in my huge family to have asthma, I have about 80 cousins in total and i'm the ONLY one with asthma or bronchitis. Crazy I know..

So in light of this.. I don't think there is link to stress bringing on my asthma personally, but after having an illness it can make me stressed and put pressure on my college work.

Hi all,

I just wanted to post a quick note to say the survey is still open and accepting responses. We have got a good start, but still need quite a few more responses.

To those that have done the survey, thank you so much! I am very greatful, and am looking forward to analysing the results, and reporting on the information.

My Asthma flares up especially if I have a cold or flu. I have had the flu so badly i have ended up in the Emergency Room for two days. I have been told that if I have chest pains and feeling short of breath to use my inhaler and then lay down for a nap. That should stay the Asthma Attack.

Thank you for your replies - I appreciate hearing your perspectives and experiences. I can't comment at the moment because I am not allowed to influence the results of the survey. But I will be sure to post when my dissertation is complete, and comment personally if I have time. It sounds like your experiences would be valuable as part of the research though, maybe you could complete the survey if you haven't already? I can only use the information from the surveys for the official research analysis in order to remain consistent - but I do appreciate your personal input as well :)

Hello,

Just for a quick update, we currently have 75 completed surveys out of the minimum goal of 100! So far the progress has been great, so thank you everyone who has participated or passed the survey on to someone.

However, we need at least 100 complete responses in order to perform the statistical analysis and represent an accurate diversity of people with asthma.

Please consider participating in the survey if you haven't already, it would be a great help to the research effort. (www.asthma-attack-research.com)
