NEW and need help plz. My 10 yr old son seems to be losing hair

I'm sry, I know I'm not in the right section, but I'm not sure what this falls under.  My 10 yr old son seems to be losing what I woud consider to be quite a bit of hair.  I can see loose strands in his bangs and when he got out of the tub tonight I noticed alot of hair left behind in the tub and I'm finding it all over his pillow.  He is my youngest and neither one of my other 2 boys have ever done this.  I can't get him into the doctor til Friday, but its REALLY bothering me and he asked me if it meant he had cancer.  :(  I explained to him that cancer didn't cause hairloss that the treatment did. He's asking questions about why its happening and I have no answers. Can anyone help me or direct me to the correct section/forum?

I would get him in with a rheumy, as it seems perhaps an auto immune disease. It could be Alopecia areata, Lupus, Thyroid Problems, so many things. He will need blood work as well.

If it makes you feel better, I lost my hair, from the treatment of chemo.

hi lovemyboys.your heading caught my attention and i just want to mention i went through a phase where my hair was comming out too.after blood tests,it turned out it was my iron levels that was causing it.i now take an iron tablet every day.this does not mean this is the cause but i would get him tested to see what is going on.good luck. tongue

Continue with the research you are doing; doctor's opinions, naturopaths, books, online searches, friend's thoughts, prayer, and hopefully you'll figure this out.

The only experience my family had to losing hair was when we started drinking distilled water and my wife started losing a ton of hair. But before we made this connection I was looking at getting a water distiller to make our own pure water which I thought was the best water only to discover from the very first search result that distilled water was actually very bad for you, because distilled water depletes the body of its minerals. Then at the same time we found out that the elderly lady next door with very thin hair only drank distilled water and a family that we knew that also had thin hair also only drank distilled water. We immediately switched to spring water and my wife's hair slowly came back.

I am sorry you and your son are going through this. You are doing the right thing getting him to the Dr i hope all is ok. I just wanted to share my son went through this also. It turned out to be psoriasis his only symptom was little pink spots on his scalp. We use a wonderful shampoo and make sure he gets plenty on sun on his head and it has made a world of difference.
It could be anything so Dr is absolutely needed to find out. this just my experience.
I do hope his appt goes well and you get some help for this.
