Prednisone and side effects - are they as severe as everyone says they are?

Hiya, I'm new here and have been prescribed Prednisone for an allergy and alopecia for three months, my doses being 30mg for one month, 20mg for one month and 10mg for my final month. I'm really concerned about the side effects as I've just recently lost weight and am not wanting to gain it all back again, I was wondering does it always cause weight gain? If so, how do I try and endure I do not experience much weight gain and is it true that you **can** experience hair loss too?

yes it is very bad for you...bad for your bones but I do not know what alopecia is so maybe it was the only good choice. You should goggle this stuff to find out more. I do wish you the best. btw prednisone keeps me wide awake but theodur never did. take care of yourself.

Most of the weight gain is from water retention, although it does stimulate your appetite. Resist the urge to increase your food intake and limit your salt intake; that's about all you can do to limit the weight gain.

Of far more concern are the more serious side effects: elevated blood sugar, calcium loss leading to brittle bones, eye problems and others. Hopefully with a short course you will not suffer any of these.

Thank you very much guys, alopecia is where you lose some or all of your hair, they've tried everything but this. I am not even sure if my does is considered as a high dose or a low dose, so any insight to that would be wonderful. I haven't been hungry really as of yet but will my weight gain be significant? Will blood pressure issues come about within just three months?

you should ask your pharmacist some questions about whether that dose is high but it does not seem to be to me. the hbp problem depends on whether you were on the cusp of having high blood pressure, I would think. The bone thing is serious and I am sorry you have found no resolve for your hair loss problem but don't think it's a great idea to keep trying with predisone.

Ultimately doses come down to mg/kg, but in practicality for most adults, there is a prescribing range. 80 mg/day is considered Max for prednisone. I have urticaria and took 60 mg/day for a few weeks, and as it didn't seem to be helping much I was tapered off. Just today my tongue swells slightly from these darn hives, and I'm put back on 60 mg/day for a few days. Didn't experience anything bad or unpleasant in the relatively short time I used it.

Steroids are considered the wonder drug of the 2nd half of the 20th century, penicillin the wonder drug of the first. Wonder drug doesn't necessarily mean benign though, but for certain conditions they are lifesavers.

prednisone is a quick fix Band-Aid drug - or in most cases it should be used that way - yes, sides affects can be many and serious if taken long term -

what is the treatment plan after you're done with the prednisone ?

I have been on varying does of prednisone for the past year. It helps with my breathing but the side effects are terrible. I have ugly and long stretch marks on my arms, stomach, thighs and my butt. I have gained so much weight I used to be 120 went up to 160 in about a week after high does of prednisone. My face is fat and I now use humalog and levemir (insulin) because of the prednisone. Destroyed my confidence, I am sad a lot now.. I have an unusual quick temper and mood swings which are also side effects. And my bones have begun to ache a lot. It's all very depressing, if you can only use it for a short period of time. Long term is extremely bad for you and your body.

I had a severe allergic reaction to some new paint at work my dr has me on 40 mg of prednisone twice daily and im having trouble sleeping is this a side effect of the prednisone
