Maple Syrup Allergy?!

Hello! I have the same mouth allergy to tropical fruits also! I don't eat maple syrup, so I don't know how/if they are related though, sorry. :( For mine, I take benadryl/antihistamine - I drink it so that it coats my mouth. This should help a tiny bit, it does for mine. My face and mouth go numb, and I have a sort of blister-like reaction to where it touches me. It goes away after a day or two.

I have a co-worker with an oral allergy just like you describe. She was getting really sore looking rashes on her face. She tested positive to allergy to certain types of trees (can't recall what she said - ash maybe? and others) and many fruits that contain seeds/pits such as peaches. Apparently the allergy to the fruit can be worsened during tree pollination season. She was told to carry an epi-pen. Sounds like you have a similar tree/fruit type allergy. You should probably get tested since it is an anaphalactic reaction.

I am wondering if I might have a Maple Syrup allergy- I found this thread searching for information. I also am VERY allergic to mangoes. My reactions to mangoes began with those cold sores you mention, but ranged up to body rashes and my face swelling up and congestion in my sinuses. When I was a kid I had the allergy tests where they scratch your skin with 55 substances and see if there is a reaction. I reacted to 50 of them including all the tree substances. None of these childhood allergies ever manifested themselves. The tests said I am allergic to cats (not dogs) but I have a cat and have had a cat for the last 20 years with no problem.

I had a cold/flu bug in November that was still with me in March. Passed my physical with flying colors but the ENT said I have reflux. This makes sense, as I was eating highly acidic foods (grapefruits, tomatoes) and eating all the wrong things for reflux (chocolate and spicy foods) thinking I had a sinus infection, not reflux.

The moment I stopped eating the acidic and other foods that are bad for reflux, my head cleared substantially. I started to take note of what aggravates the reflux.

i also just started in the last couple months to eat home made (lo cal) waffles- and apples and walnuts- with maple syrup instead of honey. Now I am noticing that every time I eat the maple syrup I get a lot of phlegm and the swelling in my throat (like there is a log in your throat, hard to swallow). I have also noticed recently some itchy skin spots- another harbinger of an allergy.

Yesterday I stopped eating the maple syrup. My throat feels better- but I am not sure its about the maple syrup because I am already feeling better overall since I started eating reflux-friendly.

But it is interesting to me that the other people on this thread who are wondering about a Maple Syrup allergy also have a mango allergy and also had tested positive for tree allergies.

One more note: I did have a big allergic reaction to a Thanksgiving meal cooked entirely in a wood fired oven.

I read your posts re possible maple syrup allergies when I was researching online about maple tree/maple syrup allergies.  My 3 year old son was diagnosed this year with a strong allergy to maple trees, which I had never heard of before.  This week he seems to have had a reaction to maple syrup (which I had been warned he also might be allergic to by a botanist, but my husband did not notify his family of this potential problem . . .).  His pediatrician gave me some information on "oral allergy syndrome,"  which is what it sounds like some of you suffer from (but not my son - his reaction was not primarily involving only the mouth and throat).  It is supposedly common when one has a tree allergy to also be allergic to certain fresh, uncooked fruits, often exacerbated during pollen season.  The suspect fruits vary with the different tree allergies.
