Chlorine allergy?

I'm not sure if anyone knows anything about this allergy; I tried looking it up online but I can't find any in-depth information.

I went swimming about 9 days ago, and within about 4 days my back begin to feel sore. about 3 days later, I realized that the sore area was covered with bumby, red rashes. I accidentally scratched one and yellow-clear liquid came out. A couple of days later, I went swimming again, and the next day, a tiny area on my chest began to break out, too. I normally don't swim, so maybe my body is not used to the chlorine. I'm not even sure if this "rash" is being caused by the chlorine. All I know is that it hurts (I can't even lay on my back for fear of irritating it!) and I don't know how to help it heal. Can anyone please help me out with any information?

Where did you go swimming? In a public pool, a friends or your own? I know in public pools sometimes the chlorine levels can be rather strong. So it wouldn't surprise me if you broke out from that. You can try a controlled study by dapping a SMALL section of chlorinated pool water on your body and see if you react to it. If you don't it may be something else that you were allergic to. Were you out in the sun by chance? Get a slight burn? I'm not sure where you are from but here in the states they have an oatmeal bath made by Aveeno that will help take the sting out of a rash and if you are itchy, try Benedryl. Aveeno also makes wonderful creams to use on rashes. I hope this helps a bit and btw, welcome to Healingwell!

I went swimming in a public swimming pool, owned by the apartment complex I live in. The weird thing is I only broke out on my back, and recently on my chest. I live in Texas, but I swam late at night on both days. The weather was only warm both times. But thanks for the Aveeno tips, I may try them!

I understand your problem with Chlorine.  My local water treatment department uses Chlorine daily to purify the water.  They also do a large "purification" twice a week. I cannot drink the local water, and find this problem frequently when traveling.  When I drink the local water, my mouth and throat swell.

Benedryl clear liquid has been a real lifesaver for me. I use it as a quick mouthwash, and thereby do not get a big dose in my system.  Benedryl liquid comes cherry flavored and clear. The clear is better for me as it has no red/yellow dye and flavoring.

were your eyes read and sore, skin dry too? Thats what I get and it irritates my asthma.

I would suggest trying swimming in a lake or natural water and see how it goes. Make sure you have
your rescue inhaler incase there is a trigger there too.
