Joint and muscle pain with allergies??

Does anyone have joint and or muscle pain in connection with untreated allergies?  I've read somewhere online that it's possible, just wondering if any of you do?  Thanks!

I've asked that question a hunnerd million times throughout the years. Never could find a yes or no answer.

Are you referring to seasonal allergies such as Hay fever? Food allergies on the other hand can complicate things a bit because there are so many varied responses to food allergies that joint pain can possibly be a side effect but from what I understand, it's not common. Are you trying to find the culprit behind your joint and muscle pain? I noticed that you post mostly in the Lupus forum so if you have Lupus it might be from that instead.

Thanks for responding.  I don't know what I have, and neither do my doctors...it could be a multitude of things and I'm being bounced from doctor to doctor.  That's why I post questions trying to determine if I need to push further in any particular area - we all know that just because a doctor says he doesn't think something is the problem is not always correct.

Hi I am on this support site for my husband's prostrate cancer. But I also have a lot of issues too. Joint pain is one. I found a dr. who specializes in food alergies. I was tested I am very allergic to all grains dairy soy and some others. It is very difficult to not eat grain or dairy it is in every thing. I eat gluten free dairy free foods or just avoid all food allergies. But the upside is the joint pain is gone the migranes are better the severe stomach cramps w/ constipation or diareah is gone depression better. I am also being treated for  bi-polar,anxiety panic disorder & depression. I hope this helps.

Right now I am very depressed my husband is going in for prostrate cancer surgery next monday the 24th April. So not eating these foods are very difficult but the pain is horrible so I just try to get through. snow leopard

I guess it is good to know I am not the only one out there who is suffering from intense joint pain during an asthma attack.  I haven't had this sever of a reaction to whatever is in the air in years and now, it has hit hard.  My 6 year daughter is suffering from the same symptoms.  Mostly it is our finger joints, but on me it has attacked other areas as well.  What is the deal with this and how can we get relief other than pain meds and inhalers.

Well, I was recently tested for allergies.  I have more allergies than I thought I did, but the "good" news is that my allergist believes all my recent problems are due to untreated allergies.  For me that is great news since I've spend a LOT of money going to many doctors and having many tests and still no answers.  He said it IS possible to have joint pains associated with allergies - not real common though as I understand it (and I do have some food allergies).  I've started sublingual drops (see my other post), and hopefully I'll see results soon (although it can take many months as I understand it).

i do i told my doc about it an he says i just get growing pains and to take paracetamol but that was when i was 5 and im 14 now

For me I've noticed it always happens in April. Years ago, when I was 16 I had allergies but I was told it was probably Crons disease and that my stomach and intestines were likely falling apart.

Does anyone know how depressing it is to hear your DR telling you that your stomach and intestines are falling apart, that your antibodies are rejecting your body and that your body is a ticking time bomb to tear itself apart within the next 5 years?! What about the fact that they tell you your only going to live until your 18 unless you take this terrifying test to prove them wrong!

They made me take tests, I've drunk 4 barrium shakes, and had 2 colonoscopies to date. I hate barrium shakes with a passion. They have a terrible taste to them, and most of the hospitals do not have the flavorings that the doctors who end up needing to drink these shakes in med school have!

I hate Nurses and Doctors who are evil and take a terrified teen's walkman/ipod away right before the colonoscopy because it was playing soothing music that they found bothersome and/or annoying! And I hate them for slapping my cute little 16 yr old butt because I am FOREVER STUCK WITH THAT MEMORY!were knocking me out with anestegia If I ever find her, she is DEAD! I know what she looks like, I remember her FACE clearly like it was 2 hours ago.   I am for eye for an eye punishment that *****!


Do not send your children to get a colonoscopy, if they have allergies and joint pain. Do not leave them alone with Nurse or Doc or Anethesiast, even if they are butt-naked on an operating table because the risk and temptation of adults strangers using anestegia to abuse them is too darn HIGH!

The Dr. I saw who 'read' my tests because I was a minor made a major mistake and diagnosed me with Cron's disease. For a decade I took the depressent Asacol under the belief that I was treating Crons disease and my flare-ups which like clock work always, ALWAYS happened every early April until May although sometimes late March were blamed on me not taking my medicine properly.

My Flare ups were characterized by chronic arthritis in all of my joints. Shoulders, elbows, upper/lower back, especially knees, ankles, wrists. With corproal tunnel in my ankles and wrists. This pain always lasts for 3-5 weeks. It leaves me weak, disoriented and confused about what day/month it is, I have dizzy spots where if I stand up/walk out of a theatre I absolutely have to cling to my friends to stay upright. All the great movies come out in April/May and I need to keep up w/em. Dizzy spots also maintaining balance standing up, and occasionally with walking straight. Vision flashes, sometimes a central black spot, sometimes a central white spot. Always May/April/June/August.

Sometimes it is bad enough to make people ask me why I'm crying when I'm not. I was also taking Allegra D, Claritin, Allegra 24 hr which seemed to help, but I still suffered from mystery joint pain despite taking Asacol and Allegra together.

Although I swear taking the Asacol did help on a minor degree in reducing joints pain. I found Alleve works 100% better than that Asacol stuff.

As far as yearly joint pain goes, I swear I feel like a creeky old 90 year old person when it happens. Walking, standing, bending over all painful. Carrying anything over 5 lbs. even more painful! Prolly won't be capable of moving during the month of April when I get to 90.

Skaldi,

I would like to welcome you to HealingWell.  Obviously, you do have allergies, but I'm also wondering if you have been checked out for fibromyalgia.  Why don't you do a little research on it and see what you think.  Please keep posting and let us know how you are feeling.

I've had joint/muscle pain as part of the symptoms of a reaction to medication (Pentasa, of all things!), so yes, I believe it is possible to have pain in the joints/muscles as an allergic reaction. Also, there are people with systemic autoimmune or allergic disorders who can experience joint & muscle pain as part of their disease and the "flareups" are triggered sometimes by allergic reactions to something specific, such as pollen or a particular food.

Hi, I am new to this website. I would like to bring up my specific allergy problem to see if others have had similar conditions and can recommend treatments.

In a nutshell, my allergies are to foods and environment (what's left, right?). My worst problems are muscle pain/spasms, extreme fatigue, and rashes on muscus membranes (in that order with first being the worst). I can control food pretty well although it severely restricts my diet (big headache living in the world that we do). Environmental allergy exposure is more of a problem. I can improve conditions inside my home, but outside is not controllable.
I have tried multiple doctors, both traditional and naturopathic, with shot therapy, sublingual therapy, BioSET, NAET, acupuncture, etc, etc.

Does this sound familiar? If so, where are you with your condition?

Helllo and nice to meet some of ya, and
Skaldi what that nurse and Doctor did to you should've been reported
and sure hope you have better Doctors now.
We all have a tendency to believe that doctors know everything, but they
are only human and plainly some just want the money.
Asthma/Allergies are an autoimmune disease and therefore, can have a vast majority of symptoms,
and that we can react differently. But it's also true that once you have
an autoimmune disease you can get others.
If the joint pain lingers and affects other joints then if could be fibromyalgia related
as it's also, an autoimmune ( however, you have to have at least 14 tender points or trigger points)
could also be early on set arthritis and y'all should diffently be tested for that to rule it out.
There is blood test for ra arthritis and I sure hope it's not that and it can affect children.
But anything can happen with an allergy reaction as well, if you have a lot of food allergies then get tested to see
if it's a gluten allergy as well, gluten is in so many foods and can be avoided...
Sure hope this info helps...
So, It's not all in your heads and don't let the doctor get away with saying that and if he/she does,
just says how'd you feel if this happened to you...

I have hypersensitivity to different substances, including food which can and do cause muscle tightness and pain - especially in the neck and upper back and rt hip - itchy gums, intense face pain on one side, pain behind the rt eye....usually is a delayed reaction by 10-14 hrs of ingesting the item and severity seems to be linked to combination of food ingested and the amount......doctors have yet to affirm this as the cause and prefer to just label it 'fibromyalgia' or pain of unknown origin. rolleyes

I’ve been continuously searching for information about my muscle problems, and throughout my searching, your symptoms are the closest I’ve seen to my own.

I get muscle pain/tightness, mainly in my thighs, but recently it has been in a variety of areas.

I usually get it in my hips (the right hip is worse) and my hamstrings, but my neck and upper back get sore daily as well. I have also had the face pain but mine is what I would call moderate discomfort/tightness rather than intense pain. I do not get the pain behind the right eye. The most interesting thing is that the pain/tightness moves around my body a lot and typically is not in more than one muscle group at a time.

The doctors are stumped right now. I have seen several and done a few tests, which have not provided any clues. I am currently thinking of allergies as a possibility because I know I have them. I have always had hay fever and have had allergic reactions to foods such as fruits and vegetables. I do get the itchy gums as well.

Could you share some further information about your pain and what you have discovered about it and what, if anything, you are doing to alleviate it?

Hello everyone,

I just joined this site.

This is going so sound daft. My partner was taking an over the counter cure to reduce stomach acid. When he first took it he had a rash but had just quit smoking & thought no more about it. He always had an itch in his elbow while taking them. After we got together he found that he was having erection problems. His GP Blamed the acid pill & changed it for another one. A week of torture followed, almost his entire body, including insideof his ears became covered in blisters which drove him crazy with itching. £ middle of the night drives to A&E before he found a Dr who prescribed something to calm it & to a certain extent keep it under control. He still has an allergy reading which is three times higher than normal & is awaiting an appointment which the allergy department at our local hospital. Now he finds that he has a lot of pain & stiffness in the elbow where the itch used to be. It feels like arthritis but doesn't get hot. Are we going off our joint "trolly", or has anybody else experienced this?

I had an allergic reaction to some medication and it took a month before all the symptoms were gone.

hi ,first time here. I had a stent put in on oct 18th, was put on new meds, lisinopril,lipator,plavix. I first had a stomach problem with the lipator , they gave me to high a dose. that was within the first three days out, I also have reflux so they readmitted me to make sure my heart was fine which it was. the second week out on the following fri. morning I developed hives,the dr. told me to stop the Lisinopril but I actually stopped that and the Lipator, by fri. nite my hands had started to ache and by Sat morning they were really swollen with terrible itching. Sat nite my left shoulder started to ache and by Sun it was locked to where I couldn't move it and my hands hurt beyond belief. I was completely helpless without my wife. On Monday The Dr. prescribed prednisone for relief of the swelling, the pain in my shoulders subsided and my hands felt pretty good, I could actually close them without pain. However on Tuesday I took my regular dose of plavix and within a half hour my hands swelled and hurt again and my throat felt like I had a hairball in it. Needless to say I am allergic to one if not all of these medicines even though in 2001 I took plavix for my first stent and it never bothered me. My question is that the joints on my hands are very painful and swollen again and my shoulders are becoming sore again also even though I am on the prednisone. I've been told that the pain my reappear for several weeks, is there anything out there to help?

I took Visterel (?) for my severe allergic reaction to augmentin. It comes in pill form and IV. It took a full month for my swelling and rashes to go.

Hey, I'm looking to renew this thread. I have muscle pain problems that I believe are caused by environmental allergies and food intolerances. I will develop muscle strains (sometimes severe) that can last anywhere from a day to the better part of a year. These muscle problems can occur for no apparent reason, but seem to coincide with other allergy reactions. Does anyone have anything like this and do they have any treatment solutions?

"Like a magic wand" gone absolutely amazing ,I think modern medicine must wake up!!!!

I suffered with increasingly worse muscle and joint pain for nearly a year.  I was taking more and more Ibuprofen, for the pain.  My doctor prescribed Feldene, which I had an allergic reaction to.  Soon after, I reacted to something in some Chinese food. 

I was sent to an allergist, who diagnosed me with allergies to mustard, fish, and tree nuts.  She put me on Prednisone, because my inflammation markers were pretty high (SED rate and CRP).  Suddenly, my all over pain and stiffness were gone!  We figured out that I'd been having a chronic allergic reaction to IBUPROFEN and the Feldene triggered a more acute response. 

A year after the steroid treatment with Prednisone, my body calmed down and I was able to eat mustard, again!  Mustard sent me into anaphylaxis, twice.   I don't eat fish and I was allergic to tree nuts before all of this happened but instead of the typical allergy symptoms, tree nuts give me I-want-to-die-because-my-insides-want-to-come-out cramps and runs.

So that's my story.  I hope it helps someone out there find an answer.  You just have to find a doc who cares enough to 1) Do the appropriate tests and 2) Believe you.

don't give up...no surrender. alot of docs are just plain mean, self righteous, dogmatic, judgemental, money loving, cheap, etc.

hold your own ground first

have friends and family help you but make sure they are on your side first

I have suffered with muscle pain for 20 years (i'm only 34) along with a couple other autoimmune problems (IC, Menieres, and some lupus type thing). I was at the cardiologists office 2 weeks ago for no big deal heart palpitations and the Dr and I began to chat about medical oddities. He suggested I start taking magnesium for the autoimmune stuff, he said it helps inflammation. I said great!! maybe that will help my painful tight muscles. He said " If you have dairy in your diet you may want to stop, I don't know why but when I eat dairy I have very bad muscle pain. You wont hear any other Doctor agree with me but it helps me". I have tried it and have had a great improvement. I was shocked when I read the other comments including neck, lower back, right hip, hamstrings. This is crazy how can we all be having the same symptoms and no one in the medical world is doing anything about it? On top of it all I am a nurse, this puts doubts in my mind about my profession.
