what meds do you take for dogs?

Hi everyone,

My sister wants to get a dog but i'm allergic but I also think some dogs are really cute. So what meds do you guys take for the symptoms? Are pugs the dogs allergy sufferers can get? or no?

Hi Sally, it's the animal dander that you are allergic to not the dog itself. All dogs have dander even the hairless breed. If you really want a dog, the best bet would be to bath the dog frequently in hypoallergenic shampoo that the vet can provide or they have some good ones at the petstores. Also too medications that you can take for dog allergies are I believe Nasonex or any other specifically for cat or dog dander provided by your doctor. Most OTC allergy meds do nothing for animal allergies.

hope this is not too late...check into a Laberdoodle...they have hair not fur...please make sure the dog's history goes back to the kennels in australia...not cheep..we got ours from Canadoodles

Hi Sally red is right it is the dander that causes the allergies. Your pet will need to be bathed twice a month. You can also take allergy shots for animals which may or may not work. I took them for cat allergies with very good results. all the best to you. later.....

Hi, there was a lady on the discovery health channel the other month and they tried different dogs for their son and they found the labradoodle did not affect her sons allergies.  They are a nice breed of dog too.  Good luck.  I am allergic to dogs too, I have a sheltie, this is our third one, I had allergy testing and shots many years ago and I was not allergic to dogs, I had allergy testing in Dec. and I am not allergic to dogs.   I love my sheltie, but I may have to give him up.  i did the allergy shots years ago and it did not help me. I took them for 5 years.  And still had chronic sinus infections and four sinus surgeries.  And still deal with it.

Hi, we have a pekingnese puppie about 4 months old. I can tell you that his dander bothers me. I bathe him once a week and brush him everyday day. He loves to be outside and when he comes back in, he's full of dust. I'll be taking him in to get groomed and remove all of his hair, at least for the summer time.

get a poodle they hardly shed fur and are great for allergy suuferes if that not quite your style labradoodles were desighne for allergy sufferes

Try typing in "hypoallergenic breeds" on a search engine there are about 10 different breeds that are supposed to be ok for peope with allergies. I know there is a list at the pet store where I get dog food. But do not ask at the pet store they will tell you anything to get you to buy the dog! If you don't know about keeping the dog try different no kill rescue shelters and sites. They are pretty understanding if you have to get rid of the dog to take them back. It is bad for the dogs well-being but they usually understand at the shelter.

I agree with Snickerdoodle, do your research on the internet, not at a pet store or animal shelter. If your not allergic to cats, possible talk your sister into getting a cat instead. I just found out I was allergic to dogs, I was glad not to be allergic to cats as I have two cuties. Animal allergies can be a real bummer sometimes. I'm very Sorry your allergic to dogs.
