new to asthma please help!!!!

Hi I am new to this web site and new to the whole asthma thing.  I need some help dealing with it.  I am taking albuterol pills.  they seem to be helping.  i have went through and did a major cleaning.  It helped some.  But is there something I can do to help my coughing.  It is not so bad unless I talk alot.  I still have problems breathing if I do to much.  I just need some tips on how to deal and not get so mad at life?  If anyone has anything that can help please let me know thank you!!!

Hang in there and it will get better.  I had not heard of albuterol pills but I would guess they take time to build up in your system.

I started with just a rescue albuterol inhaler but after a bout of pneumonia my nurse practitioner put me on Advair as a maintenance medication.  The Advair took a couple of weeks to really start working and now I hardly every use my rescue inhaler.

Hi and welcome to Healingwell. I haven't heard of Albuterol pills either hmmm. Have you asked your doc about inhalers such as the Albuterol inhaler? My son uses this when he has his coughing fits in addition to Asmnanex. But if the coughing is persistant you can try an otc cough reliever. Do you suffer from allergies? If cleaning bothers you, you can try using a face mask when cleaning. The face mask will help with the fumes of the cleaning products as well as filter out the dust. It takes a while to get control of your asthma and understand all there is to it. I recommend you research asthma or use the information here on HW. Good luck :)

thank you both!!! I also had pneumonia twice this year. I am not taking the albuterol pills because of the way they made me feel!!!! i now have a albuterol inhaler and so far things are going ok. I still am try to learn what I can do and can not do and how much I can do at a time. it is very hard and makes me mad sometimes. the coughing is getting better but I have lots of chest congestion, any sugestions????

I was on the Albuterol pills for a while. It's like roughly 50 times the amount you'd get using an inhaler. It does a better job of long term control. But because it has to go through your entire system the side effects are about 50 times worse. Jitters, fast heart rate, high blood pressure, cramps, all the same as the inhaler just amplified. It's usually only used for hard to control asthma.

I currently take Advair 250/50 2x/day, Spiriva 1x/day, Albuterol inhaler as needed, Claritin 1x/day, and old formula Actified before going to bed. If I'm really messed up I'll take the albuterol pills 4mg 2x/day, but it makes me feel super crappy.

I've had Asthma all my like,I live with it.I take Singulair,combivent inhaler,& theophillin every day.

If you are needing to use the Albuterol inhaler (rescue medication) more than 3 or 4 times per week, most doctors would say that your asthma is not being adequately controlled and would say you need to be on an asthma preventer or controller medication (i.e., inhaled steroids). If your condition is really asthma and persists for much longer, I think it would be advisable to talk to your doctor about whether you should be regularly taking inhaled steroids in addition to Albuterol when needed. Inhaled steroids are really the current "gold standard" in treating and controlling asthma and once your asthma is properly controlled, you hopefully will not need to use Albuterol very often or at least as often. And, if you still are having trouble after being on inhaled steroids for a month or so, there are other meds the doctor can consider adding.

Dear Orange3: Are you using a spacer w/Albuterol inhaler? If not, you are losing approx 40% of your meds. The propellant in the MDI cannister shoots the Albuterol into the back of your throat where you lose the 40% ... also the rest of the med isn't reaching down to the alveoli (oxygen exchange area). Ask your MD for a spacer Rx along w/corticosteroid & long-acting bronchodilator (Spiriva). Coffee works on helping alleviate some asthma symptoms such as coughing and slight constriction ... THIS DOES NOT MEAN ONE WOULD NOT TAKE THEIR MEDS & HAVE COFFEE INSTEAD... just that it might help your cough. The American Lung Association has TONS of info. Call & ask them to send you any & all info on asthma ... education is the best defense on controlling your asthma. To all the citizens of Mississippi, the State now has its first Asthma Protocol ... I am EXTREMELY proud of all the work that went into this endeavor and for the work volunteered by the many physicians. Good luck to you, Orange3.
