I have been wondering about this myself. Do people with moderate asthma need to be on steroids continously? Or can they try non steroid alternatives. Can most people control their symptoms without steroids?
Depending on whether your asthma is continious or intermittent will make a difference in your options. You might want to explain your symptoms and how often you get them. There are rescue inhalers for mild asthma like abuterol, you can take them as needed. I know that singulair is a medicine that does not contain steroids. Some people with really mild asthma can get additional relief from alernative medicine like caffeine and herbs. Good luck.
