Hi everyone, Im new to this site,  I never knew this site excisted until I was just browsing the web.  I suffer from chronic asthma and COPD.  I was just wondering if anyone has been on continous prednisolone for their asthma, I have been taking it for 33 years! and the Drs said enough is enough because of all the side effects.  Yes prednisolone saved my life but there are so many side effects, they have been trying to get me off them from 40mg and now im down to 7.5mg, but I feel awful, really tight chested, getting out of breath just doing everyday activities, tired, tearful, and mood swings.  Im also on a high dosage of Symbicort inhaler, spirivia inhaler & phyllicontin.  Has anyone thats been on prednisolone actually come off it completely and has the side effects disappeard, i.e.  bloating, especially the face and stomach.  Many thanks to anyone who reads this!

Hi boylie...Welcome to the site you will meet many new friends who will give you support and advice.yes I have been on prednisilone on and off for over 20 years and I have got off them slowly because of the side effects.When I came off the prednisilone I knew I had to do some breathing exercises ...get back walking a bit and going to the pool to swim...which all lifted my mood and got rid of the constant concerns I had about my condition. .Coming of prednisilone will take time but there is a light at the end of the tunnel...take things day by day and reward yourself for every day for every activity you do....you can do it so start today and forget the past...I am her to support you plus all the forum....luv grooveyxxx

Dear Boylie, Hello and nice to meet you, so glad you found this website and hope it helps you as it's helped me. The chatrooms here are awesome. I've not been on prednisone for long time peroids so I can't help you with that, Sorry. It can be very hard to come off of from just being on it for a short peroid of time. Just make sure to taper slowely and hope you'll be able to come off it soon.
If your still having problems getting off prednisone go back to the doctor, maybe you could go up to 10 mgs for a couple of weeks before coming back down.

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read my article on Asthma and Prednisolone. I have just been to see my asthma nurse today actually, and the trouble and side effects I have been getting. He told me that I should stick to 7.5mg only because of the side effects, but really I just want to start taking 30mg cos I feel so lousy and breathless! Just going up the stairs I feel like Ive climbed Mount Everest! He told me that although I have got chronic asthma, I have now got COPD, and I have the lungs of a 80 year old! even though Im only 45! The trouble is Ive never smoked, and none of my family suffer with this horrid disease. I now have to have oxygen at home, one cylinder downstairs and one upstairs for when Im really out of breath. I need to use it to walk to the shops etc, oh well if it helps, who cares!!

I also have severe asthma and never smoked.  I am sorry to hear that you also have COPD and have to use oxygen.

I take an injection of Xolair monthly which does keep me out of the hospital.  It is only for severe asthmatics and costs around $10,000 per year.  My insurance pays most of it.  You might ask your doctor about it.  More insurance companies are paying for it these days because it saves them money by keeping patients out of the hospitals and the ER's.
