Dry cough at night (and mild, almost unoticeable throughout day)

Hello,

For the past 5 days I have had a dry cough. It very mild, almost unnoticeable throughout the day, but it gets much worse at night such that it prevents me from sleeping. For example, from when I go to sleep (ie: 12) to about 4am, then it stops and I can sleep. Upon rising I cough and then that is it. As noted, during the day I do dry cough mildly with a high pitch (only a few times per day which is not unusual). I just went to sleep before, started coughing violently and now up writing this I barely cough (I have coughed a little but it seems normal)

What could this be? I have no other symptoms, and my temperature has remained normal (between 36.5 and 36.9 degrees Celsius). I did start smoking again. I have stopped and not smoked for 2 days. Can adults get asthma? I just did a boxing class and felt fine…

I've had this twice when my allergies got especially bad. The first time was about seven years ago conservative treatment didn't work and I did develop reactive airway disease (asthma following a cold). That time it was treated with antihistamines and prescription cough syrup, then an albuterol inhaler and finally Advair, which finally cleared it up after nearly a year.

I started in again with it this summer, and went to my doctor last month. She gave me some cough medicine so I could sleep, and started me on Singulair in addition to my Zyrtec. It seems to be getting better, and now I only have to take the cough medicine if I am outside a lot that day.

I'm also a former smoker, who quit about four years before the first episode. The allergist said it could also have been affected by some residual damage to my lungs from smoking.

You should call your Doctor. I know it's hard to find a good doctor and how reluctant we can be to going, but sometimes they can surprise you with being nice. and Yes adults can get asthma, I've had asthma all my life...

This happens to my son. He has coughing asthma meaning that he rarely gets the shortness of breath associated with asthma but when his allergies act up, his coughing is worse in the evenings and if it gets bad enough then he gets the shortness of breath - then he has to use his inhaler. His coughing is usually not that noticable during the day. You should visit a doctor though.

Yes, adults can get asthma and I am living proof of this. The older I get (I am 41) the worse my allergies are getting, and last year I started having to use an inhaler as my simple allergies turned into asthma! I found that I also have a dry cough at night that I use sips of water to relieve. Not sure what it's from though.
