Use of inhalers and heart problems

I saw a segment on my local news today that said people who use inhalers are more subject to having heart attacks.  Is this true?  I use my inhaler very often so would like to know.  I will ask my dr. but until I can see her I would appreciate some info about this.  I use an albuterol inhaler 4X a day, 2 puffs each time and an azmacort 2X a day, 3 puffs. I try not to use the albuterol if I don't have too.  Maybe once I have my dog put to sleep some of my problems will clear up.  Also, do you think that the heavy pollen and mold counts are making the situation worse?  By the way I am not being hard hearted about the dog - he is almost 17 and in bad shape, so this is necessary.Thanks for your replies.

Hi Aurora

I think I addressed some of this in response to your xopenex question.  Inhalers are hard on your heart because they increase your heart rate and your blood pressure.  The reason I use a xopenex inhaler is because it is easier on your heart.  Now, before you abandon you rescue inhaler or wait an extended time before using it, you need to understand that asthma or any shortness of breath is also hard on your heart.  Without your inhaler, your heart and lungs are struggling to maintain an oxygen supply to all the cells of your body and will also increase your heart rate and blood pressure in an attempt to accomplish this.  The stress on your heart is going to happen anyway you look at it but without your inhaler you are depriving all the organs and cells of your body oxygen for a longer period of time.  Without oxygen your cells will begin to die.  Please consult your Dr. and add this to your dicussion regarding xopenex vs. albuterol.

Thanks for your answer Allura.  I will discuss this with my dr.  I don't know why she thinks the xopenex is harder on you than albuterol.  She told me Xopenex makes you much more jittery and she said if albuterol is helping me then I should stick with it.  My concern is with having to use the inhaler everyday, but you did explain that.  I honestly think that a lot of my problems are due to my dog, poor soul.  I think all the odor from him and the smell from him being incontinent is aggravating me.  Unfortunately we are having him put to sleep next Tues.  So after a few days of him being gone and the house cleaned I will be able to tell if I am better. And the dog is very old, almost 17 and in poor health so this was planned despite my breathing problems. I will post again about this and let you know how I am doing and if i improve.  Thanks again for being so helpful, you really seem to know so much about asthma and allergies.

Allura, had just a few other thoughts.  I am concerned about the heart risks as I do have high blood pressure although it is under control with medication and my cradiologist said not to worry. I had a whole series of cardio tests and all were normal.  I just worry because I am getting older, I am 62 so almost a senior!  Although my pride is allowing me to let you know that I don't look my age! 60 is the new 40.
