Asthma attack on vacation, Inhaler ran out

I am on vacation visiting my girlfriend and my inhaler ran out. It is a climate change from where I typically live and she has a cat (which I love despite my allergies). My asthma flared up, and I didn't realize my inhaler was almost empty.

Now I am awake and holding out until this settles down.

I hadn't had a bad flare up like this in at least 5 years but have had 2 in the last 5 months now.

Since my inhaler is empty I have vaporub on my chest and drank a cup of coffee in hopes that it will stimulate the lungs/

Any other advice short of the hospital (not that bad yet) or one of those epinephrine inhalers (overall they damage your lungs).

Just staying awake because I am too afraid of how bad the attack will get if I fall asleep.

Call up yourdoctor asap, you can get something called an emergency refill to a pharmacy near you. Also can try breathing in vapor like from tea, coffee, etc. If it gets read bad, go to ER.

I agree - call your doctor pronto! I was on vacation once and I ran out of a medication, I called up my doctor and they forwarded a prescription to the closest pharmacy.

Be so careful my friend.Trying to see if things improve is putting you at great ....risk asthma can flare up so quickly and without a reliever you could be in serious trouble.Do as red suggests, call your doctor and get a prescription forewarded to nearest pharmacy.Otherwise go to ER and get help as soon asop.Always ensure you have a spare inhaler with you...take care...groovey

Hey thanks for reminding me of this groovey, I forget to mention it cuz its like a routine. I keep an inhaler 1. in purse 2. in diaper bag (haha u can tell what I have 3. In luggage 4. Upstairs 5. downstairs 6. in fanny bag. I've had a few times hwere I coldnt find my inhaler, so I fixed it by getting a refill every month til I had them everywhere around me. That why if I clean out my purse, i got one in the luggage or the diaper bag. I seem to over pack too LOL

Just a suggestion but in case of a emergency find someone who has a cigaratee or buy a pack and smoke one. I am serious it will open up your airways.

Never smoke a cigerette during an asthma attack. Smoke is a high irratant that can make breathing much more difficult.

Now Smurfy it's good you have'em everywhere but, inhalers do have experation dates, so
go check up on all of yours........
kso3165, Drinking coffee with caffine (because of the high caffine) is suposed to help, but if you
get bad seek help with the ER, and of course call your doctor back home and get your meds.............

it could make you worse...

Sorry you're having problems!
Get the inhaler ASAP via a doctor call in. Have a pharmacy phone number ready when you call.

Don't wait if your asthma gets worse...get right to the ER.

I took an asthma class, and hot tea was the drink of choice to help with asthma problems.

But...don't wait! Get to the hospital if there's any question. Asthma attacks are nothing to play around with.
Obviously...NO CIGARETTES.
