9 yr old son just diagnosed with asthma

Hi!

My 9 year old son was just diagnosed with asthma. He has suffered with allergies for the past year and 1/2 now. He is allergic to dust, trees, grasses, cat, dog and a list of others. We managed it in the beginning with Zyrtec and nasonex but they really stopped working well after a while. ANd now comes the asthma diagnosis. The new dr. we went to see put him on Singulair and Pantase (Sp?) He just started taking them yesterday.

I really don't know much about  these meds. I guess I was wondering if anyone taking these or has kids taking these if they helped and if there are any side effects. Also, how long do they take to "kick in"? Thanks in advance!

I take patenase. It works great for nasal allergies. However long term use can sometimes cause nasal sores. I was on it for over a year and developed sores. It works well by day three.
I used to take singulair, but it stopped working for me. It takes a week for it to kick in.
Will your son need a nebulizer or rescue inhaler like albuterol?
Nebulizers and rescue inhalers are the next step in asthma control. They sometimes cause nervousness and faster heartbeat.

My son when he was younger had severe allergies. For his first two years of life, he was constantly sick. As he got older we were able to put him on stronger allergy meds. He was on Allegra and then he developed seasonal asthma. He was then placed on Albuterol with a spacer along with Flonase, Allegra and Singulair. Over the years, he was able to get off his allergy meds but on occasion he would have issues. He is now 19 and has no issues with the asthma nor allergies anymore. The side effect he had from these meds is that it interferred with his sleep, because of the steroid and I believe it stunted his growth a bit. He is a big kid but not very tall - 5'9".
