Getting sick from allergies

I have heard this from many of my kids pediatricians but is it possible for them to actually get sick from their allergies? They say that it's impossible to get sick from your allergies but it seems that as soon as their allergies act up, they end up with either a sinus infection or a cold. Is it a coincidence? I myself have never actually gotten sick from my allergies before though I have had laryngititis with it. (total laryngititis! I had to just wag my finger at the kids for misbehaving instead of yelling....it stunk!)

Hiya, Sherry!

You have allergies...that lowers your resistance. So anything going around seems to find it's way right to the person with the allergies.

Also, once you have the allergy problem, you get run down more easily and it sets you up for a secondary illness, like sinusitis, laryngitis, ear infections, etc...

I bet your children love that wagging finger!! lol

Thanks Teri, that makes sense. I just wish those drs would explain those kind of things instead of saying nope it doesn't cause illnessses and leave it at that! It's like the peds saying that a teething baby don't get fevers.

Oh yea, the kids just looooove that wagging finger. They stand there and stare at me when I'm wagging at them but when I turn my back I can see them mimicking me lol I can't help but laugh!

Off Topic...usually if a teething baby runs a fever, it may be from the same thing-a stressed out, lowered in resistance body easily picks up many things! Poor babies!! sad

Hello,

I have found to be different. In the last 3 years (when my anaphylaxis was first noted), I have not had a single cold, flu, or any other form of viral infections and whatnots. However I have had a couple bouts of sinusitis (non infectious type, which means my reactions had brought them on). Prior to the reactions I would get the "roaming" cold at the time. I have found this every interesting. And yet left still questioning. Allergies are odd arn't they??

Well, I suspect that each person's reaction is different and I at 53 don't get as run down from my allergies now as I did when I was in my 20's and 30's and extremely active and amongst children more. (That could be key!~around children). My daughter at now almost 17 has always seemed to be more ill as her allergies are at their worst, and I've had to bring her in to her Dr. when he diagnosed a combo of allergy and cold.
