'atypical' asthma?

I know very little about asthma and respiratory problems but I figured I could get some good answers from you guys. I have been having many systemic symptoms and doctors cannot figure out exactly what at the moment--things related to chronic fatigue, dizziness, weakness, etc. Some of the symptoms are trouble breathing, swallowing, chest tightness etc. I went to a pulmonologist who did a pulmonary function test but it was unusable because I didnt breathe for long enough or something. I tried the absolute best I could though and that in itself should say something. Anyway that test was not usable and I had a previous chest x ray from a year before which was too old for her to base anything off of. She said she would just treat me like I had asthma and gave me inhalers. I have never had the classic symptoms of asthma, never had an attack, and I dont wheeze. Another doctor told me that sometimes asthma presents atypically. Have any of you guys had similar symptoms and were indeed helped by asthma inhalers? Right now I am waiting on blood results related to Lyme disease and coinfections, and corticosteriods are typically bad for those conditions and I don't want to complicate things.
