Sinusitis and Augmentin

I hope that everyone is having a nice day (despite allergy and asthma issues).

I'm posting today because I was recently diagnosed with sinusitis.

On Sunday, my mother noticed that my face was swelling a bit (I didn't realize it myself). Then, the next day, my nose, and especially my left nose kept dripping and dripping. I couldn't even sleep faced down. I also had a bad headache and toothache (my entire teeth). I assumed it was sinusitis so I went to the hospital and sure enough, it was. The Dr prescribed an antibiotic called Augmentin and another med to help clear my nose.

It's been 4 days since I started the medications. The massive headache and teeth ache have gone; however, my nose still feels stuffy and at times runny (especially after showering) and my head sort of feels like I'm out of it - a bit dizzy (vertigo-like).

I don't really have a question but I'm wondering how and if you were diagnosed with sinusitis and how you handled it.

The doctor says if this antibiotic doesn't work (she prescribed it for 12 days), that she's going to have to do it the IV way?

From the sound of my post, should I continue to take the antibiotic for the 12 days or should I go in to see my dr again to explain that I'm not so sure the antibiotic is helping?

I'd appreciate any comments.

Sorry you are having sinusitis. It can be miserable. It of ten does cause dizziness and your other symptoms.

IV? No one ever suggested to me that getting IV medication was an alternative to oral med if the first one didn't work. Sounds feasible, just the first time I've heard of it. I've always been given another oral antibiotic. One doc told me only sulfa drugs get to the sinuses because there is very poor blood circulation there. I only tolerate those for a couple of days though.

To help with the congestion you could try using a sinus wash. Put the words into the search box at the top of the page for many threads about this.

Try to get this cured - don't stop treatment too soon. You don't want this bug to become chronic!

i see you are on augmentin (amoxocillin) - good drug -it usually works for sinusitus. good luck

I read somewhere that Apple cider vinegar works well in disinfecting the sinus. I guess we drink it..?? Have you heard anything about this? I'm wondering if it's effective at all....but I'm also hesitant because vinegar is acidic and I'm wondering if it will have a bad effect on the stomach.

Yes, I've heard about tap water. I guess we really have to be sensitive about those kind of issues. Totally agree. Do you have sinusitis as well? Or some other allergy, I suppose...?

I was scheduled for an apt this Thursday but ended up walking in today cause of the headaches and dizziness. The dr told me to keep continuing with the Augmentin, though. I thought she said she was going to do IV but she mentioned that it was for patients with much worse symptoms than mine. So I suggested perhaps changing to Cravit tablets (levofloxacin), since another dr prescribed them to me when I had sinusitis 4 years ago. She said that it takes about 3 months for sinusitis to heal so to just continue with the Augmentin.

Is that so...? I'm not so sure whether to seek a second opinion or to just trust this dr and see. She booked me another apt for next Tuesday.

when i have to have i.v for infections -its usually 3 treatments. i have to really be sick -otherwise it usually pills. just the fact that your dr talked about iv therepy is us unsusal and shows they are on the ball. most drs would never consider it.

finding a dr that will give i.v antibiotics is extremly hard. i broke my nose in a car wreck also and its then that my problems started . i cant take penicillin based antibiotics so my choices are limited
