allergies turning to asthma

Hi, My 3 year old has bad allergies, that cause her a chronic cough for 9 months a year. She also has nasal congestion. The doctors aren't sure if it is allergies yet or asthma. Does anyone know whether if the drs. decide it is allergies, if later that can just become asthma? Do allergies like that turn into asthma at any time, or there triggers for that, or is it unpredictable? Thanks

Hi and Welcome to HealingWell! yeah

That's tough having a little one so sick like that sad - however I'm not quite sure what you are asking? 

Asthma is most often is a symptom of allergies.  If someone is allergic to something, they could have asthma as well.  They do not have to go together.  And your last sentence sums it up well - it is unpredictable.  Hope this has been somewhat helpful.

Let me try again. We know my daughter has allergies. The drs. keep talking about whether they can diagnose her with asthma  or not. If they say "She does not have asthma" does that mean we are in the clear as far as asthma goes, or that she could develop it at any time? If she can develop what would be the factors to cause that to happen?

Some of these questions you could just ask your daughter's Dr.'s as I'm not a Dr. myself.

 

Anyone, especially someone with allergies has the possibility of developing Asthma.  I do not know the factors.

 I am an older ( but not that old ) adult female suffering with allergies for over 15 years now, which "Did go into Asthma,  becasue my Doctor talked me out of the testing nono and continued to give me perscription after perscription to control my allergies. sad If I would have insisted on the allergy testing and got the shots I would not have Asthma today. Most Children grow out of Asthma, like my son did, but I got it too late in life, now I am stuck with it. Good luck and God bless

I've have allergies most my adult life and several docs have told me that I am borderline asthmatic but never have given me anything for it. My allergies are soooo bad that I am on allergy meds all year around and almost 24/7. I am severly allergic to mold and mildew so when I go outside to rake the leaves I need to cover my mouth and nose or I get short of breath not to mention those horrible itchy watery eyes. I have been thinking about getting the shots but I am allergic to sooooo many things.

I have what is called Allergy induced Asthma. I have allergies that require meds year round and I take Nasacort and Singular daily. I have had allergy problems for 20 years and the asthma started about 15 years ago and progessively got worse to the point that I now also take Advair twice a day too.

I tried the allergy testing and shots for 4 years and they did not work for me. It may work for some or maybe have a better chance if you are young. I didn't start to develop these issues until I was in my late 20's.

I hope you get some answers soon.

THIS Post IS IN RESPONSE TO ALL THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM ANY TYPE OF SEASONAL ALLERGIES.TRY SINGULAIR.  IT REALLY WORKS.  My 8 yr old son has had a low grade fever off and on now for about one month- beg. of Sept. He really suffers from the ragweed and his skin just breaks out in excema.  We have tried everything and found that taking Singulair at night along with taking Claritin and Nasonex really helps him.  IF you have dogs or cats put them outside and get yourself a HEPPA filter(fan)and run all night in their room, the sound helps them fall asleep and the filter clears the air.

allergies can turn into asthma but you can also have asthma and develop allergies cuz i did. i started off with just a dust mite allergy which then developed into asthma.the asthma got worse (from mild to moderate)and is hard to control and i have now developed allergies to horses and oral allergies to tomatos and passion fruit
