Cough-Varant Asthma?

I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma. But I also have noticed at night I start coughing a lot to where I start to gag. I have started using my inhaler and it helps with the coughing and a lot of phlem comes up. Afterwards my chest is sore and I'm fatigue...is this normal afterwards and could it be cough-varant asthma?

Yes, I also was diagnosed with exercise-induced Asthma, and like you, have a lot of coughing at night. Haven't found out for sure if it is cough-variant Asthma, but it sure feels like Asthma (chest tightness, shortness of breath, feels like something is constricting the ability to expand my lungs, hawking up lots of flegm) and I don't have any audible wheezing when I feel this way.

I also get the sore chest & fatigue, so yes I think that is part of the Asthma. Might be good to ask your Doctor about the Cough Variant form of Asthma, and also to recommend something to keep your Asthma from getting out of hand at night. I'm getting a nebulizer soon to use daily as preventative against the nightly "attacks."

Are you on any other medications for your asthma as maintenance? Have you ever tried Singulair or Asmanex? My son used Singulair and Asmanex for his nighttime episodes and it helped tremendously.

No I'm not on any other medications at this time...I just have my albuterol inhaler that I use.

Welcome to HealingWell.  I have had severe asthma for over five years now.  It sounds like to me you need to be on some type of controller medication for your asthma, maybe some of the ones that Sherry mentioned, such as Advair, Singulair, etc. and save the inhaler for your rescue medication.  It sounds like you need to talk to your doctor and let him/her know what is going on.  I strongly advise anyone with asthma to be treated by an allergist.  Remember, I am not a medical professional.
