valium and xanax

  I suffer with panic attacks and gad, I have been on xanax low dose for a long time ,my dr gave me valium to try  because it is longer lasting , i know i should ask him this and i will when i go in to see him again ,i have only taken 1 2mg  valium several weeks ago,but i feel i need the xanax for when i need it to work fast . has any body taken these two together ,[not at once] just in emergencys. wouldlike to hear from someone who has , the dr says they are the same,

Hey there,

No I have not as my physician would never prescribe the two together.  I think perhaps you need a higher dose of the Valium and take it on a regular schedule until you get your anxiety under control.

Valium has the longest half-life and is a good choice if you want to keep the anxiety away until things get better.

I am not a professional in anyway but this is the med I use.  I have been on some of the others over the years and yes some work quicker then others but they also leave your system sooner.

Thanks for answering ,I asked my dr to let me try valium  i only took i ,it seemed to take a long time to work , so i didnt take any more , maybe i do need a higher dose because the pharmacist told me that is a [2mg] is a very low dose , i am one of those people that does not like to take anything , and the doc knows that ,he has a lot of patience with me. i write down every time i take a pill ,

Im prescribed Xanax and take it daily. if my agoraphobia is soaring, and im hysterically panicked, i have back up valium to take the edge off. I can say that my doc is extremely careful in what he lets me have and when etc....he is an excellent doctor and i trust him. ive only needed the 'back up' valium twice in the last 5 years.

Alwaysanxious, I too have Valium and Xanax. I like you, prefer the Xanax as it is faster acting. I don't know why but when I use the Valium I tend to feel more anxious the next day. So I will continue to use the Xanax instead.

I wish I could help you regarding the Valium, but I have never taken it before. My doctor has always given me a script for Xanax which reads "1mg four times a day as needed." My typical routine is .5mg three times a day, and 1mg at bed time. That is a total of 2.5mg a day. This leaves me with an extra 1.5mg to use if needed. Every day is not a great day for me, lol, but this is what has worked for me. What dose of Xanax are you currently taking? The best of luck to you! Blessings, Julie

I take valium and for me it works'
Xanax does nothing at all IMHO FOR me anways

'Hoping you do talk to the doc as I know mine would not give both either

**If your doc did not RX the 2 together then I would really suggesst not taking them together........

idea  Hi im new here and glad to be here, i have had panic attacks since 1987, took 1 year to diag;

I was on librum for 6 mos when my Dr told me Xanax was the drug of choice.my Psy Dr prescribed Xanax 1mg 4x's daily. mine are random and can be brought on by thought. took me 5 years to find certain triggers, i have diabetes and a gluose reading below 50 is a major attack takes ten min or less to get sugar up,and two and half hours to come out of attack, so he scribed me low dose of valium. IBS also a trigger on a bad day, less than 4 hours of sleep is also a trigger,i also have a mild case of agoraphobic going on. This dosent seem to effect the panic attacks not that im aware of. I don't go outside on Monday's. 12/19/1999, i thought i had a bad stomach ache, went to emergancy hospital, woke up after 12 hours of surgury with colon had perforated and had a bag. It was reversed in 3/13/2000. took a year to figure out that it happen  Sunday night ,Monday morning, I had made hugh plans for my business and stood to make $7,000.00

profit. Man makes plans God laughs...... My biggest problem was I became very tired of explaing to everyone what was going on, so i stopped.It'snice to get that out.Thank You yeah

I am glad that you got all that out
I did say that Xanax and Valium did nothing for me
BUT everyone is different
Your doc also RX them.........right

I do on occasion have to take ativan and valium depending on what DD ( darn Disease) I am fighting lol)
That combo works for me
YOU have no need to explain to anyone IMHO
This illness/disease is REAL..........NOT something we make up my friend as you know
I am so sorry you did lose all that big dough...........

I think because our bodies are so different that what works for one doesn't always work for another. My mom always was able to use Valium and it worked for a little while for me too, but now I find that the Xanax works better for "me". My doctor did prescribe mine, but they were definetly prescribed at different times. The Valium first and the Xanax secondly. I agree with Lyn no one should use them together. I guess we have to find the med that works the best for our individual conditions.

You mentioned you've been on Xanax for a long time on a low dose. Be very careful. Even though you aren't taking a high dose, you must ask your doctor how to wean yourself off of the drug. If he/she says not to worry about weaning yourself off of it, ask a pharmacist.

I have horrible panic attacks also....i have asked my doctor for help....they keep giving me these pills anti depressants...zoloft, paxil, things like that....I dont think I need that.....My dad gets xanax and he gave me a half of one and it helped me soooooooo much.....but, my town is so full of pill heads...docs around here wont give them out....I dont know what to tell my doc....do I tell her that my dad gave me a half of his pill and it helped me...or will she think that I am nutz for taking someone elses meds...(which I would normally never do...cuz I am sometimes scared of meds)....
I hope you feel better.....I hate this disease...it has ruined my life.....I hope you find what helps you....

Hi, Angela!

I suggest that you try one more time to make it very clear to your doctor that you are struggling with feelings of panic. Try to be as direct as possible in describing to her the physical symptoms you're feeling during your attacks. It seems that she is prescribing you medications that are used for depression as well as anxiety, rather than just for anxiety. Giving her detailed descriptions - maybe you even need to write them out - of what you experience in your body may help her to prescribe something to improve the underlying mental turmoil. It's important for you to get your own prescription for something that is going to help you.

Also, a brief HW reminder to all that sharing prescription meds from or with someone else can be dangerous and is in fact illegal in some countries (the US, for instance). Don't let that make you more anxious, though, Angela; just keep working toward getting your own medications that will work for you.

Thanks for the help...I know I should not have taken my dads med...he has been on them for like 15 years...but I was in such a horrible state...he was like just take half of this and see if it helps....I am going to the doc tomorrow....hopefully they will help me....and you are right...I dont need the anti depressant....i need something for my nerves...they always ask me if i ever feel suicidal....and i am like....NO....I GET A PAIN IN MY FOOT AND THINK I AM HAVING A STROKE....that is why I am in a panic....I always think I am dying...killing myself is the last thng on my mind...lol.....Thanks to everyone who talks with me on here.....It is just so awesome to find people going through the same thing I am.
