Hi All
I am on my 5th antidepressant and have not found one that helps to ease my GAD or Depression. I have tried Prozac. Citalopram, Amitriptylin, Mirtazipine and Venlafaxine and im starting to think I will never find one that works and wondering why? I have got some CBT coming up which I know will be a big help to me but think it will be good to find something which will work and help ease my anxiety and depression.

Hey Ben,
Amitriptyline is a Tricyclic. The best med that ever worked for me was Nortriptyline which is a second-generation tricyclic antidepressant . I took it for many years and then it pooped out on me.
Of course each person is different but it is worth a try, just be sure to give it a fighting chance if you use a Tricyclic.
Take care my friend.

I'm right up there with you Unhappy.
I have taken so far about 8 different meds and have not found but one that worked for me and I had a bad side effect from it and can not take it. That was Buspar. I was fine on the 1/3 dose twice a day. But when doc had me bump it to 1/2 twice a day. I got the dreaded face trimmers and was pulled off of it asap.
Paxil,Cymbalta, welburton, buspar, xanex, and even doc tried benyadril. Non of which worked. Lexapro is sitting in front of me to try and I'm to chicken to give another try. To many bad side effects from the drugs as detoured me major.
Good luck on finding one that works for you. It is a tough road. And only time will tell which one is best for you! Don't give up. Everyone reacts differently to meds. I am one of those that can take half a benyadril and it knocks me out for several hours. My actual allergy med I can only take once every 2 days. Its that strong for me.

Hi
Thanks for your reply's guys. I know people have had great success with antidepressants but it also seems people are not so lucky in finding something which helps with there anxiety/depression and there does not seem to be any reason why? As i said i am waiting to start CBT which will help me deal with my anxiety/depression but would also like a med which would help. I have been getting terrible nightmares most nights and often wake in a panic which is not helping my sleep issues and wonder if there is anything which can help with this issue? I spoke to my therapist about Abilify but have not heard back about weather she thinks this med would help me.
Thank you all

Hi Ben,
I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles with finding a medication that will work for you. I was lucky my first time around with Zoloft, although I had side effects and felt sort of like a zombie for a while, it was much easier than dealing with the middle of the night PAs and constantly fearing death. I know even then it took me at least a month to adjust to the zoloft before it really started helping me, so make sure you give whatever you try some time. I think some peoples bodies are just more adaptable to the medication than others, its nothing you can help. I hope you and your doctor can find something that works, and definitely ask for something to help you sleep, perhaps if you can get some good rest it will help you be better able to manage your anxiety/depression with CBT. Hang in there, we're here for you!

Hey Ben,
When do you start the CBT? It seems like you have been waiting forever my friend. I am so hoping that CBT will give you the tools you need to deal with the anxiety and cut it down to size for you.
My best wishes and stay strong.

Ben,
I tried two others before having success with Paxil for my depression nearly 20 years ago. I've learned in the past 2-3 years that it also helps my anxiety, as when I've been off it or on a lower dose, my anxiety gets worse. I remember it taking nearly a month to make much difference back in the beginning.
Good luck to you, my friend, and let us know about the CBT!
Hugs,

I take Paxil. Worked at first, not so much now....but perhaps its because I take such a low dose.
Sometimes it takes a lot of work to find the right med for any person. Everyone is different and different meds react with people differently. Good luck on finding something that helps you!

Sup, Ben?? Sorry to hear you can't find a medication that helps. Don't give up! I'm assuming you gave the anti-depressants plenty of time to work? What does the doc say about you not having any success yet?
I tried Pamelor many years ago. I didn't have bad side effects and it worked great! Keep looking! It's definitely worth it when you find the right medication.

Hi Guys
Thanks for your reply's, I heard from my therapist yesterday who said I should get a start date for my CBT soon there has been a delay due to a waiting list as CBT is a popular therapy and lots of people wanting to do it. Aries I have been on all my medications long enough to give them a chance to work, what i find with all of them is that they seem to work early on but then seem to stop working very quickly. I have spoke to my doctor and a possibility to why they are not working may be down to the use of recreational drugs which I abused a lot which may of caused some damage to the part of my brain which produces seratonin but there is no way to prove this. I reckon the CBT is going to help me loads but I do want to find a medication which will help me as well. I have been getting very disturbing nightmares which I have always had but they are happening every night now and really disrupting my sleep so I need something which will help with this. I feel a bit bad that I am relying so much on finding a pill which will help me as I know there is a bigger picture to sorting out my problems and hopefully CBT will fill that gap in but in the meantime I need something to help me, Does that make me a weak person?
