We finally got our financial situation under control, got all our credit cards paid off started actually putting some away and bam it happens. Daughter has downs and we got a letter from social security saying that since shes been receiving SSI they've overpaid us $4500 and we need to pay them back. Its rather confusing because we sent a tax return in they did all the math, my god you'd need to be a calculus major to understand the formula they use. Her payment would change from month to month but didnt think anything of it. The form they sent showed they have overpaid from day one. Atleast it clearly states if they screw up to bad you still gotta pay it back. Always when the stress and anxiety starts to get under control......

Sorry Jk that things have gone down hill for ya.

I would check into a payment plan. They might be able to take a small amount of her monthly payment. I don't know if that can be done as I don't know anyone who is on SSI anymore.

Dang that just stinks. To bad there is no way to know what the actual payments should be so you don't have to worry about getting over paid again.

Wow, I am so sorry as that is a huge error on their side.  If you have to pay back I agree, look into a minimum amount you would have to pay monthly and also do they expect interest as it was their mistake.

My thoughts are with you.

you can ask for a waiver. dont send it as they will pretend they never got it. It would be best to go to the ss office. they will probably say they dont know what you are talking about. you will have to pursue this. I think you would say that it is to much of a financial burden to repay. and it probably is. i learned of this from a book at the library - it pertained to Social Security Disability - however it may work for you - same policies? if you do have to pay then you can negotiate a payment amount - make it as low as possible, they can spread it out over years and it wont be so bad. Yeah its awful getting things like that on saturdays when you gotta sit on it all weekend. It just makes no sense they overpaid from day one, im self employed so we have to give everyone a tax return for financials. I could understand if i got a huge raise 6 months into it and didnt tell them, in fact the payment was 291 for the first payment they said they overpaid by 275. the last payment was 451 and they say they overpaid by 200. by march april and may they payment was 451 but they didnt overpay at all. She has a genetic syndrome, it doesnt get better or worse shes always gonna stay the same. I can guarantee the phone call tomorrow is gonna be an awful experience.

This is not about SSI or finances, but about bad things happening just when you get the anxiety under control. At the end of April I had taken a week off after finishing a very long and really tough work assignment, and just when I was starting to relax, my mom called at six in the morning -- never a good thing. Dad had had a massive hemmorhagic stroke, and the doctors did not expect him to survive. I had been going through a crisis of faith for many months before that, but when Dad was in the ICU, I begged God for my Dad back. Long story short, Dad woke up after being unconscious for a month. I walked in to Dad's hospital room one morning and he was sitting up and staring straight at me (No he didn't sit up by himself, the physical therapists had put him up, but he was fully awake for the first time in a month). Dad is now in long term acute care, and still has a trach tube and a feeding tube and a catheter, but he is responding to physical therapy and getting stronger each day. It still blows me away that my Dad came back from the edge of death at the age of 74. My business is off right now, my income is uncertain, and unlike in the past, I cannot go to Dad for help. But you know what, none of that matters, because my faith is restored, because I have personally witnessed a miracle.

Im not a firm beleiver of miracles or anything like that.. the situation is, they over paid you, pay them back bare minimum.... the lowest of the low.... it needent be an awful experience, you didnt steal the money, you didnt know..... pay them back, no interest, at nuffing or as near as per week.. this is something out of your control, now you know and can control it, you are in a better position and it can all be resolved without a major disaster. The payments have been made, and now you can pay them back....
If their is a query about it dont phone them atall get your doctor or a socail worker to do it for you.. best of luck with it and stay focused and strong xxx
