Hello, Can't Deal,
I panic in doctor/hospital waiting rooms so I take something to keep my mind busy and challenged that I enjoy like crossword or logic puzzles. Something that I really have to concentrate on and that I enjoy. Or soothing music/sounds/ or a relaxation program on my I-Pod, or maybe a foreign language course. Something that is not passive. Also, at home I play a board game or card game with someone, anything to break the vicious cycle. I have even literally told the thoughts to "Go away! Stop!". Sometimes it's a concerted effort to fight this battle. In fact most times I think it takes several tactics to calm ourselves or change gears. You can also allow yourself a few minutes a day to worry and then refuse to dwell on it the rest of the time. I know, I know all easier said than done. But I hope you find what may work for you, from someone here. Dont be afraid to try even the ones that might seem silly, especially if your anx is really high. Often suggestions seem ineffective when our anx is high and we just want to know how to turn it off, right now!!!!!
Just remember, we have practiced and practiced and practiced these responses. They won't go away overnight. We need to practice practice practice NEW responses so that they become automatic and not the old ones. Make any sense?
