Tapering off Effexor xr 150

Well, it's time to go off Effexor XR.  My doctor says it is irritating my heart.  Everything I have read speaks of awful side effects.  Has anyone successfully gotten off this medication without major side effects?  I cannot take a leave from work and need to continue being mom to my kids and an effective wife.  At this point, I am having such bad anxiety about dealing with the side effects that it is stopping me from getting off the med even though I know there is a danger to my heart.  Even my doctor doesn't know how to taper me off.  I am super drug sensitive.  I'd be happy to read any advice anyone can offer.

Hello Mae,

I have never been on Effexor but did wean off of Cymbalta and I did a very slow wean, over a matter of several months.  I did not have withdrawal sx that way and I worked with my Doctor. 

I am sure you will hear from members that have actually weaned off of Effexor.

Sorry to hear it has caused you some heart issues.

   Hi.

I have been on Effexor for almost 14 yrs.

I have asked my Dr about getting off, and how it would be handled.

He said it would be a decrease in mg, over a period of weeks. This would be much better to

 handle the effects, and not be as difficult. Just a suggestion for you.

Hi

Welcome to our forum im glad you have found this site. I have just come off 225mg of Effexor xl over a six week period which has been supervised by my psychiatrist as I was also switching to an other medication. I found coming of the Effexor hard and did get withdrawal effects which were not good such as brain zaps, bad headaches, sweats etc etc, I would say that you need to come off this medication very slowly and work your way down the the 37.5 mg dose every other day to try and reduce the withdrawal effects and speak with your doctor and follow there advise. I hope things go smoothly for you and keep posting as the members here are great and can always offer support and advice from similar experiences they have had. I have not been on here as much as I would like as my mental health is not the best at the moment but wish you all the best and keep us posted on how you are getting on with things.
