anxiety and breathlessness

I would be grateful for your opinions. I do have GAD and have been hugely stressed and anxious for a couple of weeks about a good close friend who learned that she has a serious illness and is facing surgery and chemotherapy.

This morning I woke up early with difficulties breathing. It frightened me and I hd to open the rear door and stand in the fresh air (and rain lol)for a while before the feeling went nd I could breathe easily again. Now I am afraid to go to sleep tonight in case this happens again.

Can anxiety and stress cause this?

Edie- I woke up the other morning and started hypervenilating i guess.  never done that before but i was breathing fast and i starting panicking and i seriously wondered if i should call an ambulance.  very weird.  i told myself it was just anxiety and panic and it went away after a few minutes.  very scary!  been afraid it will happen again since but hasn't. 

There is a girl that I know that's a senior in High School at a nearby town and she has cancer and is supposed to be going through all of this too. I've experienced anxiety over the fact that she has it because for one, I think it's sad, and two I don't know her but ALOT of my pretty close friends from that school are good friends with her and I hate to see them down. And also, I experience ALOT of breathing problems myself with anxiety. In fact, just the other day I remembered one time when I was a little kid, I ran into the living room crying and screaming, "Mom, I can't breathe help!" And I now realize that I did in fact have anxiety quite badly as a child, I just sat it aside and forgot about it until I began to experience it again in the past couple of months. But, yes, it can definitely cause breathing problems.

A naval colleague of mine was on board a ship in north vietnamse waters which was shelled by north vietnamese and hit twice. He has since his return from service in Vietnam, suffered heavily with anxiety attacks and depression. Would he be compensated by DVA with his ordeal which has changed his behaviour markedly. I am aware that some some people are more affected that others but this friend is barely a shadow of his former self.

Some other things that may help when you feel breathless is to turn a fan on and let it blow on you, or like you did get outside and soak up some fresh air. The feeling usually shouldnt last very long and you will return to normal.
