Can you take buspar and xanax at the same time?

I was wondering if you can take buspar and xanax together.  I take 7.5 mg buspar in the morn, and 7.5 mg in the evening.  Today has been extremely bad, I have weird tickly sensations all over my face, and before I started the buspar, when I would take a 1/2 of a .25 mg xanax, it would help a good bit with these strange feelings.  It seems the buspar has given me muscle twitches and buzzing sensations, can anyone relate or help me out?  thanks so much!!!! most docs and psychs familiar with anxiety patients consider buspar as an overpriced placebo tablet,and worthless  however its heavily and expensively promoted to docs, some sadly accept the ads

it probably shouldnt be taken with xanax as they are 2 different types of tranquillisers and may fight each other inside you

just take the xanax

I took xanax and buspar together for years with no problem. But you need to talk to your doc about your side effects! Take care!

Hello............ Bless your heart! God knows I know about the weird symptoms of which you speak.... and that I've been to enough doctors to sink a battle ship and that after they've stared at me... like I'm a total mental case...... for an hour.... all I can get out of them is that I have an auto immune disorder... not unless Lupus.... I've been on tons of steroids... methotrexate (chemo) and Plaquenil (lupus drug) for years.... and this past seven months... all these symptoms have become just totally out of control! ...... so please ask to see an auto immune specialist.... or RHEUMATOLOGIST... tho'... I have to say that the Rheumatologist hasn't been as helpful to me... as a good old INTERNAL MEDS doctor..... .....

Well as long as one of Harry's screw ups made it back to the front page I feel like I should set things as straight as I'm able to.

BuSpar is not a tranquilizer but it does have a mild sedative effect. It's completely different than a benzodiazepine and it is very common for them to be prescribed together. As far as it's efficacy goes, clinical trials have shown it to be very effective against some kinds of anxiety and ineffective against others, but it is hardly a placebo. This medicine also came out many years ago and is available as a generic, so it's not expensive and probably not even advertised anymore.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist of course.

It works well for lots of people. That Harry used to make me so mad. I don't know where he got his information, but I have a feeling it was from somewhere in the posterior region of his body and not his brain, haha.

yes benzos can b very hard to get off of but you can do it
taper down with docs knowledge and it will or should help

Found this when I looked up Buspar. I'm on the off brand, 10mg. This scared me:
A possible side effect from Buspar from sedating the dopamine receptors, although Buspar is not a sedative:

Tardive Dyskinesia and Tardive Dementia

Roberta had an unusually severe case of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a disease frequently caused by the neuroleptics. The term "tardive" means late developing or delayed; "dyskinesia" means abnormal movement. Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder that can afflict any of the voluntary muscles, from the eyelids, tongue, larynx, and diaphragm to the neck, arms, legs, and torso.(1) On rare occasions it can occur after a few weeks or months, but usually it strikes the individual after six months to two years of treatment.

Any of the neuroleptics can cause tardive dyskinesia. The total dosage probably affects the likelihood of this happening, but the dose relationship is not easily demonstrated, and any amount must be considered dangerous. While some symptoms improve or even disappear after removal from the offending medications, most cases are permanent. There is no known treatment for tardive dyskinesia.

Often the start of disease goes unnoticed, because the drugs that cause it also tend to suppress the overt symptoms. Thus the disease percolates out of sight, finally breaking through with uncontrollable twitches, spasms, or writhing movements. Whenever possible, patients should try to stop the drugs periodically to check for abnormal movements.

Went through a very psychologically traumatic event about 2 years ago. I went to the doc and learned that you never mention "s--cide" or "h---cide" to a doctor or his nurse, just like you never mention certain words in an airport. Right away, they wanted to put me on an antidepressant, even though I insisted that I was not depressed, but rather, I was experiencing anxiety. I tolerated the antidepressant for 1-1/2 years, but the heavy sweating side effect was just too much for me so I finally got off them. Xanax truly does work getting rid of anxiety, but what i have read about it really scares me, so my research led me to Buspar. I can feel depression lately starting slowly to set in and I do not want to go on any more antidepressants. They all have that same sweating side effect that drives me crazy. I have an appt. with my doc this week to talk about Buspar. It sounds too good to be true, and you know what they say about things that are too good to be true, but if it's half as good as what I have read, it's possible that it's just what I need. I want to off Xanax forever. Right now I only take 1mg/day, but I've been on it for a long time and I just want to be free of dependence on any drug. So wish me luck, folks.

Hello and welcome.  Buspirone (Buspar) is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. Buspirone is especially effective in persons with generalized anxiety of a limited or moderate degree. From what I know of Buspar it is  not very effective in persons with severe anxiety, panic disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

My own experience with Buspar included no side effects and no potential for abuse. My doc put me on Buspar to "augment" my antidepressant.
