Hello and welcome to HealingWell,
I am glad you found us and please do stick with us ! I look forward to getting to know you better.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety disorder that's triggered by a traumatic event. You can develop post-traumatic stress disorder when you experience or witness an event that causes intense fear, helplessness or horror.
Your experience with your son's emergency tracheostomy certainly is in the criteria of intense fear and helplessness. I have this disorder also so I can identify how you feel.
Some types of therapy used in PTSD treatment include:
- Cognitive therapy. This type of talk therapy helps you identify and change self-destructive thought (cognitive) patterns.
- Cognitive behavior therapy. This approach combines cognitive and behavior therapy to help you identify unhealthy beliefs and behaviors and replace them with positive ones.
These approaches can help you gain control of the fear and distress that happen after a traumatic event. The type of therapy that may be best for you depends on a number of factors that you and your health care professional can discuss.
Along with therapy I found exercise, yoga and meditation to work well for me. I still have moments when my PTSD is triggered but now I give myself 15 minutes to feel sad and then I get up and get busy.
You are in my thoughts so know coming here and sharing your fears is a good thing.
Again a warm welcome to HealingWell.
Gentle Hugs,
Kitt
