Numbness in finger

Hi everyone :)

I have had numbness (almost like the feeling when a limb is asleep) in my left pinky finger for the last month or so, and my doctor keeps telling me it's nothing, but it is really annoying, and having friends tell me I should get it checked because it may be serious has made my mind wander on what it could be! :S I have even had myself panicked about brain aneurysms and stuff like that, which I don't think is what it is, but my mind wanders a lot when I let it, and of course I look up symptoms on the internet... and an aneurysm in one of my BIGGEST fears... has anyone else had this, or any idea what it could be?

If you feel like you are alone, you are wrong.  There are many people who share this problem.  People get over it too, and are able to go on with their lives.  The first step is realizing what your problem is. It feels to me like you have Health Anxiety.

Something else that has really helped is trying to focus outside myself.   When I had health anxiety at it's worst state, I could hardly think of anyone but me.  I was so wrapped up in my symptoms and every little feeling in my body that I was very unaware of what was going on outside me.  It is good to get involved in something that interests you, whether it's a hobby or sport, writing, gardening, doing charity work.  The more time and energy you put into outside projects, the less time an energy you will spend being anxious about your health and yourself.

I also would have cancer scare episodes.  I would notice a lump or skin abnormality and worry and obsess about it, remembering the pictures I looked at in the book of symptoms! During each episode of health anxiety, I would consult various doctors until I got one that I thought was taking me seriously.  I did have 4 skin cancers removed and right after that every unusual blotch on my skin "must be another skin cancer"  The last time I went to the dermatologist it turn out to be "dry skin" on my ring finger. 

 

Have you considered seeing a therapist to help you learn how to deal with health anxiety ? Also if you feel you may have a  brain aneurysm, see your Dr. to rule it out and then let go of the anxiety.

I have at a cat scan done, and everything came back normal, I think it scares me the most because it could happen so suddenly and when I hear of it happening to someone I automatically go into panic mode and think that I may also have one... I suffer from migraines a lot and there are times when I will get a sharp pain go through my head and that will be it, but I'll sit and worry about it, even though my doctor said it could be related to my TMJ. I hate constantly worrying that I am sick and calling family members and stuff... but I am getting a hold on it slowly but surely. I notice any slight pain or something weird that happens and instantly think there is something wrong... it makes me feel like I am going crazy, but hopefully one day I can be rid of it for good!! Thanks so much!
