Panic Attacks vs Panic Disorder

To anyone that understands...

I always thought that Panic-Attacks were Panic Disorder. Still am not sure. Nevertheless, my Psych Dr. last week thinks I am also dealing with Panic Disorder, as I am waking during the middle of the night already in an anxiety-panic attack. So far all the different meds are not working. Anywaz, if anyone can explain any of this I would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a very simple way of looking at it -

A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that develops for no apparent reason and that triggers severe physical reactions. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you're losing control, having a heart attack or even dying.

You may have only one or two panic attacks in your lifetime. But if you have had several panic attacks and have spent long periods in constant fear of another attack, you may have a chronic condition called panic disorder.

Hello, I had these night panic attacks a while ago. The interesting thing is if I was going to sleep on time I would sleep OK, but if I was going to sleep an hour later than usual I would wake up at hour or two later with panic. Till now I don't know the cause of it. I started to take Xanax and I'm having this med for 10 years now. It really helps for my panic. I never taking on daily basic and I never was taking every day so I'm not addicted. My night panic attacks went away (I'm having them now but very rarely, not like before). I'm keeping xanax as my "emergency pill" next to my bed anyway, even if I use once a month, I know that this will help me. Try to relax before going to sleep, some progressive muscle relaxation may help. Also, your night panics could be a temporary thing and will go away on their own. Good luck.

That is the nice thing about xanax, they can be taken as needed. And that isn't always needed every day. I wanted to use another word, but can't remember how to spell it. Fibrofog, I think... But I take xanax. I use to take four mg a day, now I take one and a half. So it isn't (or wasn't) addictive for me. As long as it isn't abused, it is a great med. I have been on it for many years. It calms me down when I need it. And takes the edge off of things.

Yep, theres a big horrendous difference in them. Unfortunately I have panic disorder. If I cld chg any ailment I have, and there r many, itd be to get rid of that one. Ill take the fractures n no stomach any day ovr this.

Wow Blue...thanks for bringing this up. I know that you suffer with many painful physical ailments, and to say that the worst affliction is the panic disorder is huge. I have often felt almost guilty for complaining about anxiety, when other people suffer other more physical diseases...but you give validity to the fact that panic disorder is truly an awful thing to endure:(

I believe that any suffering be it physical or mental is tragic, and everyone here at HealingWell are fighters and champions in the truest sense
