I took Ativan for years because I became dependent on it.
I would advise extreme caution and read as much as you can
I trusted my doctor and was ignorant about
benzodiazepines.
I tapered off and it was not easy.
My new drug is biofeedback.

I too did not realize how addicting this class of drugs is and it was a nightmare trying to wean off. Many doctors no longer prescribe benzo's for long term use due to this. I would take the lowest amount possible. JMHO.

ativan is a great med for many people. i have heard it is not strong enough compared to xanax ect. but it only does not have the fast kick in but it has a longer time of action. 1mg is not much, some MD's give 4mg at bedtime as a sleep aid and sometimes it is used for intractable nerve pain. 0.5-1mg 2-3 times per day is a starting does and it can be used for long periods of time, you must be careful stopping and do not do it abruptly. phenobarbital tapers are used to discontinue.
