ok i have had a super dry mouth lately and so i have been sucking on lots of lozenges and chewing gum and hard candies.  well,, today after i only had 1 hard candy - but too much sugar, my tongue is sore and looks red in the middle.  can this be from all the sucking on candies i wonder?  i hope so.  every little thing freaks me out.  well not entirely, but i worry.  and i have this metaly taste in my mouth.  ugh 

guess i'll lay off the hard stuff for awhile  lol

Hey Hazelnut,

I just wanted to let you know that when I suck on too many hard candies or lozenges, my tongue tends to get sore and have a red spot as well. The metallic taste you have is probably just a little blood (nothing to be concerned with!) because the taste buds have been rubbed raw from the hard candies.

I totally understand freaking out over little things like this, too. Every time I have even a minor and explainable thing happen, I always freak out and think it's a sign of some horrible disease. But I guess that's health anxiety for you, huh? lol

Don't stress about it, but definitely lay off the hard stuff! =)

thanks so much Em!  i also sucked on Zicam which are sooo nasty friday night through monday.  ugh  just wondered why today when i stopped almost it started hurting.  anyway, i'm so ridiculous worrying over something so silly. 

yes health anxiety sucks!  literally! lol

Yes, I have had the same thing! It's just your tongue's way of saying enough! I also get a weird sore tongue from eating too much pineapple.

Don't be suprised if you get some of those raised, white taste buds from it too. They hurt, but go away after a few days.

The Zicam could also be giving you the metallic taste in your mouth. It always gives me a weird after-taste too. Sometimes I use the spray at night if I feel something coming on, and I can still taste it in the morning!

ok now i just looked at my mouth with a flashlight cause the roof of my mouth is sore too and there are red bumps and red splotches in the back of my throat by my uvula? and on the back of my roof of my mouth. ugh!~ i just had a cold last week. wonder what it is?

I think you should go to the doctor, if you haven't already. It's more than the hard candy. Also dry mouth could be an sign of dehydration.

Hi Hazelnut!

I just got over thrush! I had been sick with the flu and went to the dr. they gave me zpack and a steriod shot. Well after that I developed thrush! So had to go back to the dr. and they prescribed me diflucin (sp) I took one tablet the first day and then 5 days later another one. Also if it is thrush eat yogurt with the live active cultures and also pineapple works very well...but i would wait with the pineapple until your tongue is not so raw!

did your tongue hurt or have red spots on it? my throat spots look red with maybe white in the middle a little. the nurse said it can turn red before it turns white. ugh i might go to ergent care later just to verify.

i have had it before and taken GSE and gargled with Gentian Violet (just a few droppers in a little bit of water. i used to use for my son - i swabbed his mouth. goes away instantly.

it's been like 3 months since i took an antibiotic but i've been eating too much sugar lately.

The back of my throat was kinda of red splotchy and my tounge looked kinda thick. It was raw and when i would eat it would burn a little. I would go see your doc and have it looked at just to make sure thats what it is!

i was at ergent care after my son's allergy tests and there were about 10 cars there so i didn't go in.

sooo, i'm treating myself for the thrush and see how it looks in the morning.

since i don't have a sore throat i'm pretty sure that's what it is.

I hope it isn't strep as that can lead to rheumatic fever and damage your heart if untreated.

Excuse my worry, lately anything that can go wrong has been going wrong with my health.

i know right?  but i have no fever at all and no sore throat.  i have had it twice as an adult and i was miserable.  bad headache, sore neck, bad sore throat.  i knew i was sick.  white spots on throat. 

i'm thinking i would react the same again.  if it's not better tomorrow, i will go.  i just feel kinda stupid running to the doc so quick since i did that about a month ago when my son had strep and i found a white spot on my throat - and it wasn't strep and it only lasted a day.  weird. 

and my tongue has never been sore with strep either.  i won't let it go too long if i feel bad.  thanks for your input though. i know - my friend's son just had strep and he just had a little sore throat - they say kids who don't have many symptoms can get damaged by it.  i know it's dangerous.  when my son has it he throws up and gets super congested in his nose.  i can always tell.  even tho they say you don't have cold symptoms, his nose just closes basically. 

here's hoping i'm better tomorrow.  i hate paying copayments for dr's visits.

I know what you mean about the costs. I wasn't thinking about the tounge just the other activity in your mouth and throat. I hated always taking my kids in because I thought I was worring too much but I only had one time when they just had a cold. I hope you are better when you wake up.

well my throat looks better - but my tongue is still sore. now i'm wondering how in the world i got thrush. i took an antibiotic but it's been a few months. i have been eating a ton of sugar and had a dry mouth but of course now i'm worrying what else is wrong with me. ha everywhere you read it says ppl with compromised immune systems etc. not a usual thing an adult gets. and why my mouth is so dry. the allergy doc or my pcp had no clue. nice.

i've been off my nexium all week and still dry mouth. maybe i'm sleeping with my mouth open.

I get a dry mouth when I start to get dehydrated plus about all of my medications say they can cause dry mouth. I hate all these small things that bug us as we never know when something is a serious symptom!

Thrush is a kids disease, I thought that too. My daughter got shingles when she was 12, the doctor asked her if she'd been hanging around the nursing home? So we can get these no matter what age I imagine.

well i went to the dr and strep test was negative - he said it didn't look like classic thrush. no white patches. even though my tongue is sore - the pic he showed me was a bright red shiny tongue. mine looks like a pic i saw onlie though with the middle raw. he said the zicam could have done that along with all the hard candies i was hurting. he said he has no clue what it is. but he did say that red dots can be strep.
ugh
i got some Biotene toothpaste to see if that helps my mouth and some prevacid instead of my nexium to see if that helps. i haven't taken my nexium since monday and it feels better.

I'm glad you went in, even though he didn't figure it out. You don't have strep which is a good thing to know. I hope things get better - soon!
