Took first Zoloft, WOW< not for me!!!

I had some side effects when I first took Zoloft about ten years ago, but I gave it some time, per my doc's advice, and stuck with it for another little while. The effects eventually went away. I would recommend asking your doctor and reporting your symptoms, of course. It does sound like it's anxiety, though, in my opinion... perhaps anticipation of side effects triggered this? It wouldn't be unheard of for people with severe anxiety (like almost all of us).

Addition to this-- I noticed on one of your other posts that you were already experiencing a lot of anxiety just at the idea of taking the meds, so it seems probable that your fears have manifested into a great big panic attack because you were expecting lots of side effects. We anxious folk do that to ourselves quite a bit. 

Of course, it's possible that it's something simple like coming down with a cold... but I think it's worth mentioning to the doctor, regardless, just to be on the safe side. Could be it's just not the medication for you. Personally, I ended up doing much better with Wellbutrin, but some people are exactly the opposite. It's often a process of trial and error when dealing with medication for anxiety or depression, but worth it when you find something that works. Eventually, I was able to come off the meds completely, thanks to therapy, save for some Xanax on an 'in case of emergency' basis.

Hi WP,

Considering the effects that you had (whether they were physical/mental or a combination of both) I would probably not take anymore of the Zoloft. There are plenty of other SSRI's that you could try.

Call your doctor and ask about another Rx to try. As Risa said, it is often a trial and error thing before you find what works for you.

I hope that you are feeling better soon. Try not to anticipate a bad effect with your new meds, as this could bring them on somatically. It is hard to tell the difference, I know...so many of the effects of anxiety are similar to actual physical reations.

You will probably experience some s/e from any SSRI, but I would say that reaction was unusual...and remember the side effects should taper and go away within a few weeks.

Well good luck and let us know how it goes...you need to feel your best, you've got a physically demanding job! It sounds amazing though! Go give your beautiful horses some nuzzles from us.:)

You are still a rock...because those of us who face down the anxiety and panic and still get up and fight are the strongest people of all!

No one is immune to it...even the toughest of them. You will find your way back. I am sorry, I can't remember if you have looked into therapy? (we have had a lot of new members and I get backgrounds mixed up)

It really made the difference for me. Therapy and medication in combination is helpful for many as well.

You are doing wonderful things with your animals! The rescue story brought tears to my eyes! And the 'laughing horse' picture was awesome!:)

The Zoloft would not cause you to have those side effects lasting for days like you have mentioned. I took it one time for 6 days straight and stopped with no ill effects. You only took 1 pill, and it was a starting dose at that. What I think is happeneing to you, is that you got yourself all worked up over taking the med in the first place, and sent yourself into a spiral.

I am currently on Zoloft 100 mgs, doc wants to increase to 150 but i'm gonna wait a while. This is my fourth time on it within the last 10 years, and I know that the start up side effects can be harsh, but in the end it's worth it. I also take mine at night before bed along with a xanax.

Did your doc give you the Valium to counter the side effects? If not then maybe a faster acting benzo is what you need to get you through the initial start up, like xanax or ativan. Remember, it does take 6-8 weeks, maybe longer, to feel the full benefits.

It is a known fact that with any ssri, it initially raises your anxiety levels until your brain adjusts to it. Hope this helps you some, but I would still call the doc if you're that worried about it. Take care...
