I have been suffering with anxiety for 5 years following an ectopic pregancy and a miscarriage,i have been on citalopram in the past 10mg it helped to a certain extent but never took it completly away,i had a baby october just gone when pregnant i stopped my medication and all my anxiety attacks dissapeared BUT as soon as i had my son it has all started to come back again, since i have started having regular periods i have noticed around the time of ovualtion i start having difficulty sleeping my mind is constantly working overtime thinking about
silly things while im trying to sleep. anyway when i do sleep im waking up hardly knowing where i am feeling smoothered !!
i am also feeling strange as though im not real and having itching episodes and feeling out of breath im hardly getting out the house cus i keep feeling peculiar ....this all gets worse right up untill my period ends it stops for about
a week or so then i ovualte again and it all starts up again...i have spoke to my gp he has told me to go back on the medication i do take diazepam 2mg when needed but it doesnt help..the thing is the citalopram 5mg makes me a hell of alot worse i dow want to feel worse before getting better cus i need to take care of my son...HAS ANYONE ELSE GINE THROUGH THIS NIGHTMARE AND HOW DID THEY CURE IT WITHOUT MEDICATION

Debz, The same thing happens to me EVERY month. I get more anxious a week to ten days BEFORE my period, and then AFTER my period during ovulation. Unfortunately I can't "cure" mine without medication, and even being ON medication, it doesn't take it away completely.
I'm sorry I have no advice on how to "cure" it, because in my honest opinion, it can't be cured. It's something we have to deal with and learn coping skills to handle.
Maybe someone else can help you with the no meds route that you seek, I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone.
Take care,
Fox

I agree...short of hormone therapy there is probably nothing that you can do besides some lifestyle adjustments.
You could try the typical suppliments like the B complex vitamins, herbals like L-Theanine, and the things that work with your body naturally like Gaba and Melatonin (for sleep). You could also try adding in soy to your diet and upping your exercise around this time.
Cognitive therapy and breathing/relaxation exercises are really helpful to bring down overall levels of stress. See our Resource Guide for some help with these.
Welcome and post anytime here with us. It is good to know that you are in good company here, with people who understand what you are going through. We are here to help, listen and support anytime.:)

I get the exact same thing every month too. It starts about
a week before, then gets better once it starts, then I seem to have one day at the end that throws me off again. I get that same smothering feeling too, it makes me jolt up in bed and gasp for breath.
I'm positive that for me, it's fluctuating hormones and just knowing that is some comfort to me. If I just keep reminding myself that it is just the hormones and that it will pass, I get through pretty well, though some days are still harder than others. I agree with SC about
the cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation/ breathing exercises, that has helped me the most through all of this.
I hope that reading some articles on CB and relaxation/breathing will help you. Just know you are definitely not alone!

Dizziness can be a common anxiety symptom. It can include feelings of floating, being off balance, feelings of faintness, or falling.
Breathing exercises will often reverse the problem. See our Resource Guide (main page 3rd post) if you need instructions, there are links to sites that teach them.
If the problem persists or gets worse, then of course get it checked out with your doctor, but hopefully the breathing and relaxing will help.
Be well,

I couldn't cure it without medication, it was so bad.
I got nightmares, insomnia, depression, random crying, anxiety attacks and panic attacks when ovulation started.
I was a mess.
Even with relaxation, meditation, and breathing exercises, I couldn't cope.
And although my friends were there for me, it was hard because I needed someone to help me contain myself. Trust me, insomnia is lonely when everyone is asleep and the anxiety is so bad that you feel like doom is approaching.
It turned out that I have PMDD and Yaz is my treatment.
It's actually working for me really well. I rarely get attacks anymore :)
However, I wish you luck on this medication free journey, and please share some coping methods if you find something that works!

Great job on making the appointment and being pro-active with your health concerns! The diary was a terrific idea.
Beat wishes on your appointment, and let us know how it goes and what the doctor says.:)

Oh yeah. When your hormones are wacky, everything tends to go into SuckTown. But try to stay positive, you have a network of people who can totally relate and are here for you!
I'd also look for some hormone balancing supplements.

I had PMS-related anxiety attacks and mild depression in my 20s until my (very good) physician recommended birth control. Until then I was on Paxil, and hated it. 3.5 years ago I had to quit the birth control because hubby and I are trying to get pregnant... I find that I don't have as much anxiety as I did when I was younger, BUT now I get anxiety when I am about
to ovulate, which is a new symptom!! I know it's hormonally-related, and I want to talk to my fertility doctor about
my options (obviously birth control is no longer one of them.) When I was on Yasmin, it was great. I didn't have any PMS symptoms, and it even cleared up my skin. Oh, also helped with the excrutiating cramps I always got. Because I couldn't keep taking birth control, I instead had laparoscopy to treat (hopefully) my endometriosis, but I think after my surgery, my ovaries have ramped up the estrogen production so now I have anxiety when I ovulate!! Hormones just really are a powerful thing... I do try to eat organic and limit my exposure to hormones and antibiotics, and I no longer want to take drugs for the anxiety, but I found a natural supplement online that sounds good. I have yet to try it but am very seriously thinking about
it, as my heart is racing as I write this, and I could break down crying for no apparent reason any second now... Oh, in addition to that, am only 115 lbs at 5'7, and whenever I get anxiety, I am nauseous and cannot eat much of anything for days. And end up losing a pound or two that I cannot afford to lose. this sucks!! My fertility doctor keeps telling me that once I get a successful pregnancy, it will help with a lot of my issues, but from the comments on this forum it looks like I could get worse during pregnancy, or worse thereafter... Almost don't even know if I should bother trying...

I've been posting in the Bi-polar forum and this one because the symptoms of related to my PMDD cause such drastic changes in my life/personality that I am literally delusional around that time of the month. I've only recently linked it to PMDD. I have been looking all over for a good well populated message board for it because it is ruining my life and I'm desperate for support. I've found some good resources. Unfortunately, everything seems to conflict. Some say it's hormonal. Some say it isn't. Some say Progesterone will cure you. Some say that will make it worse. Some Swear by Yaz. Others say it made them a nightmare. Some are pro-antidepressant. Others say supplements. Personally I don't know what to do. I'm very afraid. I've been fighting these feelings every month for so long, becoming a monster two weeks out of every month and every drug I'm put on makes me worse. I can't find a good doctor who knows a definitive answer. Honestly, I just want my overies removed. That would solve the problem. But no one will take out an uninsured 26 year olds overies. I'm sorry your doctor prescribed you another anti-depressant. It's hard to make them understand. You could try the natural route.

Hi Jules and Illmissucat,
I am sorry that you are going through this.:( I am experiencing some similar issues, but I am older (41) and attributing it more to peri-menopause.
I never had PMS, moods swings, cramps, ect...until recently.
I like Illmissu's idea of going the natural route. I would recommend seeing a homeopathic practicioner to try to get things back in order...especially if you are trying to conceive (even then, you need to be careful what you take, make sure he/she knows you plan to get pregnant)
Best wishes to both of you with these issues.

Hi all! I just wrote a new thread regarding this, as I'm going through what you described right now!! I'll look up some supplements that will help me when I'm going through this. I've decided to go off bc and since I usually didn't ovulate, this has been a new thing I'm experiencing (crappy ovulation symptoms...aren't pms symptoms enough??)
Thanks for all of the helpful advice!!
