If you could find a therapy appointment sooner, then I would say go for it...but sometimes it is quite a wait, depending on your area, insurance coverage, ect.
I would say that if you are really suffering with this, then go ahead and start your Rx since your doctor has prescribed it. Many people are presctibed their meds for A/P by thier regular doctors.
Chances are you will start to feel better around the time that your appointment is set. ( SSRI's typically take up to 6, sometimes 8 weeks to fully build in the system) This can be a plus... and possibly a negative.
The plus is that you will feel well enough to be very receptive to the work that therapy entails. I went into therapy without having medication, and it was really tought at first! Looking back, I wonder if having something to take the edge off of my A/P could have helped!
The negative could be that you start to feel well enough that you are tempted to forego the therapy. I believe that this would be a mistake, as I really believe that therapy is the best long-term treatment that you can invest in for yourself!
Either way you decide...the end result will be that you are getting help that you need, and that is what matters...there is no magic order or combination to treatment...everyone is different, you just need to get started and do what works for you.
In the meantime, I would go to the library and check out as many books as you can find on A/P. I did this and took what applied to me from each one, and really customized a 'self-help' system for myself. Check out our Anxiety /Panic Resources as well (main page, 2nd post) there are really good links to breathing and relaxation exercises that reduce anxiety and panic if practiced daily...they seriously work!:)
I know it seems overwhelming and like a lot to take in all at once, so check some things out, and do what seems to help
you...the more you try, the better your chances of finding recovery.
Keep posting too. Being a part of this community has helped me so much, I can't even tell you! I hope that you find it works for you as well. Talk to you later,

p.s. don't feel bad about the edit...lots of people accidently mention things like that...but we have members as young as 13 here who we try to help, so we keep it very 'family friendly' here:)
